Cloudy Cleethorpes 2015

Cleethorpes. Better known for its beach, fish and chips, ice cream and donkey rides than aviation. But on Sunday, 28th June the resort played host to an air display as part of the resort’s Armed Forces Day celebrations. Despite a less than encouraging weather forecast I braved passage across the Bridge over the River Humber to see what the display had to offer…
On arrival we were greeted with low grey cloud (Cosford all over again!!) and the news that the opening act, the RAF Falcons, had had to cancel due to the windy conditions.
The cloudbase seemed to be gradually lifting though, and the flying got under way with an aerobatic display by Gerald Cooper kicking things off

After which there was a display by a pair of DH trainers, the Tiger Moth and the Chipmunk. The Tiger went first

Followed by the Chippie, but it displayed too far out in the grey over the Humber for any decent pictures.
After the 2 trainers it was the turn of the AW Meteor NF11 from Coventry. It flew a very nice display indeed in the able hands of Jon Corley

After the WW2 heavy came a much lighter bomber of WW2 vintage, and one of the main draws of the show for me. The Duxford-based Blenheim I making a foray up north was not to be missed and did not disappoint!

Following the Blenheim, and in a sky which was finally showing some patches of blue and even the odd glimmer of sun, was Vulcan XH558

We were not sure how much the Vulcan was going to do as she was just passing on her way home to Doncaster, but Cleethorpes ended up blessed with a full display

With the sky brightening, it was the turn of the local lifeboat and the Sea King replacement Sikorsky to show what they could do.

It’s nice… but it’s not a Sea King.

The next item to display in the patchy sky was the Yak display team, equipped with 3 Yak 50s and 1 Yak 52. I have to admit they flew a very neat, polished display which I enjoyed greatly.
