CO/UA merger to close today!

Today is the day that Continental and United officially merge and begin trading as “one” company; also taking the #1 spot in terms of the world’s largest airline!

The accolade was held briefly by Delta after they bought Northwest back in 2008 (AA held the position from 2000-08!).

What does this mean for passengers in the immediate future?

Not a lot really. The only real difference that passengers will begin to notice will be the change to the livery…Continental’s globe logo on the tail with United’s name on the fuselage.

Although both airlines are legally trading as one company from today, each airline still operates under it own individual licences/AOCs, and the process of merging the two licences together will apparently take a few years because CO needs to merge its Micronesia operation, before the transition to a wholy new single operating licence/AOC can be granted.

And for people travelling to/from London Heathrow…things remain the same, CO operates its EWR & IAH flights from T4, and UA operates its flights from T1, but the overall plan is that they will both operate from T1 once the T1/T2 terminal redevelopment has been completed.
