I’m aiming this enquiry at Cockpiteers and Museums with aircraft on outdoor display, etc. Is there a demand for original, service-issue canopy covers?
I know where there is a quantity of them. I haven’t seen them, but I’m told that retrieving them from store will be quite a difficult and dirty task, so it’s not one to be undertaken unless there is some prospect of moving them on.
I expect they will date from the ’40s and ’50s, so types might include Meteors and Vampires, possibly Hunters. There may be a few “exotic” covers, for Spitfire, Lancaster etc.
Prices, I hope, would be reasonable for a tailor made cover for a cherished cockpit.
Is it a waste of time, effort and wages to dig them out of store? It’s the kind of thing I love doing but unfortunately I’m not likely to be invited to take part, due to insurance, H&S issues, etc.
So, before getting too involved, I’d like to gauge opinions – if the aircraft types are right, and the condition is acceptable, the price is reasonable, etc, is there going to be a demand do you think?
I have my doubts but over to you!

Will do.
I still have the two Anson engine covers and several prop spinner covers. The Meteor cover went iirc.
Just bits and bobs left now mostly, apart from an unused Harvard cockpit cover and engine cover. There were a couple of forumites interested but it all went quiet.
I might take a few of ’em down to Shoreham.
Sorry Captain Bombay, there’s no more covers coming from that source. Good luck with your search!

Alan,
I know a good candidate to take an Anson engine and spinner cover from you. Also, have you still got the Meteor Mk.4 cover?
PM me with prices please.
Regards,
Anon.

Make that a double for the Piston Provost, if fact any old engine covers, pitot covers etc would be appreciated!

Canopy cover for Sunderland × 1
Canopy cover for Harvard × 1
Canopy cover for Wellington × 1
Rear Turret cover for Sunderland × 1
Engine and spinner cover for Harvard × 1
Spinner cover for Balliol × several
Spinner cover for Anson × several
Tail wheel cover for Balliol × several
Main wheel covers for Mosquito × several
Prop blade covers for Brigand (these are for single blades) × several
Anson Engine Cover (port) × 1
Anson Engine Cover (starboard) × 1
Vampire Intake Covers (starboard) × several to come maybe
Just another update, a small quantity of “Vampire Intake Covers” has come to light (starboard only unfortunately!). I’ve not opened one up yet but I assume they are for the main engine air intake. They are boxed and as new. Is it worth me negotiating for them, do you think?

Canopy cover for Harvard
Canopy cover for Wellington
Canopy cover for Meteor F3/4
Canopy cover for Mosquito NF38
Nose covers for Mosquito NF30 and B35, PR34
Rear Turret cover for Sunderland
Engine and spinner cover for Harvard
Engine cover (port) for Mosquito
Spinner cover for Balliol
Spinner cover for Anson
Tail wheel cover for Balliol
Cover for observation blister in roof of Dakota

Prop blade cover for Tiger Moth (just the one, two needed per prop!)
While tidying the pile up this morning, I discovered that I also have two Anson engine covers, both unused/as new. These are post war dated and so I assume they fit the later, smooth cowled Marks. Still, the more the merrier!

Hi Alan,
Please could you e-mail me a photo/dimensions for the Meteor F3/4 cover?

Well I don’t have a spinner or a tailwheel either, Alan. I do have a BP picture of a Balliol completely wrapped up in purpose made covers, so it occurs to me that if I collected a complete set of covers and put them on a framework, I could just claim there was a Balliol underneath.
By: Arabella-Cox - 8th March 2013 at 16:30
Since you mention it Wulfie, I have covers for the Balliol tail wheel and Balliol spinner. Should fit your cockpit section a treat!
And nice to see one in use already, Dave!
By: Wulfie - 6th March 2013 at 21:38
Alan, If you are going to be at the Wings & Wheels aerojumble at Halfpenny Green at Easter being your selection of covers along, I’m sure some will fit some of our stuff. I was mortified that you did not have Balliol covers by the way! I have covers for two wheels, and one prop blade, though I only have one actual wheel and no prop blades !

We would certainly look at any Lancaster covers from wheels to turrets to canopy for NX611.
