CockpitFest Australia

Greetings everyone

Fellow forumite ‘battle’ and myself have decided to have our own little CockpitFest here in Australia. We have chosen Saturday the 18th of June for the day so that it corresponds to the UK fest. Time approx 1000 to 1600 in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

On display will be the cockpit sections of a SEPECAT Jaguar, Hawker Hunter and Sukhoi Su 22, in addition we will put on small displays of instrument panels, Russian flight gear and maybe a few other things TBC.

Any forum members and their friends are welcome and I will be PM’ing some of you just in case you miss this thread. The Fest will be held in my garage because I am unable to move my cockpits at this stage, ‘battle’ will be bringing his Hunter in for the day. I am not going to put my address / ph no on an open forum so anyone interested must PM one of us for the location.

I really hope we can get a few people together who share a common interest as it will be a great opportunity to talk shop and check out some great aviation artifacts. If anyone would like to contribute by bringing along a few things to add to the displays then that would be greatly appreciated.

All the best
Paul

Hello All,

We have had a great day with lots of fellow enthusiasts and interested people to talk to and show around. I think it has been a great success but it has all been thanks to the co operation and support of everybody that turned up, from those just walking past to those who travelled a great distance (Daniel and jollygreenslugg) and those who bought such fascinating exhibits and conversation. One of the highlights for me was seeing so many young people showing an interest (3 kids in a Jag), hopefully they will grow into the aviation enthusiasts of the future. A preofessional photographer took numerous photos of ‘Daniel’ and I so should see some good results soon.

Some photos attached, best wishes to all of you at Newark.

Unfortunately, due to both a lack of expressed interest and a change of personal commitments,I won’t be able to attend the RAAF Museum on the Sunday, after all. The interactive will go on anyway, and the museum will be open!

I’ll ask Paul to see if there’s interest in a later forum visit to the museum, however.

Sorry about that, but Sat should be good!

Hi Folks,
As mentioned earlier, I’m happy to co-ordinate a group visit to the RAAF Museum on the day following (Sunday 19th June) if there’s enough interest. The museum’s free entry, there will be a short flying handling display* by a museum aircraft just after 1pm, and the ‘new’ Strike Hangar with the F.111G, Canberra and Phantom is open. Bring photo ID as it is a military base.

I’d suggest allowing a couple of hours between 12 and 2pm, or around that. I won’t be able to arrange any extra access, so please don’t ask, sorry! However I will be able to give detailed insight and attempt to credibly answer any questions relating to the museum displays.

It’s an hour drive for me each way, so I’m not going to just take it on the off chance, but I’ll ask anyone interested to leave their name and contact details with Paul on Saturday, and if there’s enough names it’ll go ahead.

*Type, serviceability and weather dependant.

Thanks Howard,

I will take plenty of photos of the exhibits and people then post them up here ASAP so maybe folks over there can see them during your event.

Just 2 days to go.

G’day folks,

Less than a week to go, and it’s all rather exciting! I’ll be sure to wear warm clothes, as growing up in Melbourne (fifteen moinutes from the suburb in question) has taught me what to expect! I may even bring a surprise of my own.

Thanks for your efforts, Paul, I look forward to the day.

Cheers,
Matt

G’day Paul

I’m very jealous at the moment as unfortunately i’ll be in Qld working that weekend, but if this is to become an annual thing i’ll keep the date free next year. Good luck with everything, i hope for a good turn out…. very sad i wont get to see the awesome jaguar cockpit in person.

Cheers

G’day

Latest news is that we will also be having someone bring along their Lancaster instrument panel which should look good alongside the Me109E, Spitfire and others. The numbers of people attending is slowly swelling to the point where I have had to ask another friend to come along and help me run everything, it is good to see that a number of people are bringing their kids or grandkids – hopefully we can ignite an aviation spark in them.

In answer to daniels questions;
The cockpits will be undercover except for the Hunter which will be outside, if the weather is really bad we will get that undercover as well. Instrument panels and other displays will be inside.
Food will not be available although we will be organising a run down to the shops around lunchtime for anyone here at that point. Free tea and coffee will be provided, one of my friends is bringing a cappuccino machine as well.
No entry fee.
The Jag and Su22 will be open for anyone who wishes to climb inside, Battle will decide on access to the Hunter separately.
We are doing our best to reduce the OH&S issues involved with cockpit access.

Fingers crossed that the weather improves as it is VERY cold in Melbourne at the moment.

Since the search function still seems to be down can anyone PM me the forum names of known Aussie members, I was going to look up the RAAF Biannual pageant where a group of us got together but can’t find it at the moment.

I just thought I would bump this thread up to the top again and include some photos of the cockpit participants to drum up a bit more interest. It is a great opportunity to meet fellow enthusiasts and study some iconic cockpits in great detail.
