I know this is a British film and has anyone seen it here and can give a review.?..it is not for sale yet in the US and I am will be interested to see how this story was treated here. Like the men of Stalag Luft III and The Great Escape, one had to admire and repect what these men endured during their time at Colditz or any other prison for that matter during WWII. Was this a made for television movie in the Uk or a film that was shown in the cinema? No motorcycle chase scenes I hope or Tom Cruise flying out of Colditz in a hang glider !!!!! ( maybe that will be the US remake of the film)
LOL….fire away troops !!!!

I recall that there was some moaning beforehand that the story had the name Colditz tacked on to make people believe that it was based on facts. I didn’t see it but I imagine that the producers probably had a generic PoW story with a bit of love interest added and asked themselves what the first thing that came to mind was when they thought of British PoWs: Colditz.

The original was good because it had some basis in truth. In fact, it had a lot of basis in the truth as it was based on the book by Pat Reid who spent time there. I still believe that whilst a lot of modern second world war films crow about accuracy, you still have to go back to British war films of the 50s to capture what are the truth behind an event.
Take for example films like ‘The Colditz Story’, ‘The Wooden Horse’, ‘Reach for the Sky’ and ‘The Dambusters’ which follow faithfully respected books on the subjects. These films also didn’t feel they had to embellish an already rivetting story and add sideshow plots which usually revolve around some pretty WAAF or other. 🙂

Ouch…… was hoping for a great British War film here…….the original was pretty good and have several documentaries on the prison. The men who made the glider are something else….. Coldtiz was no holiday camp that is for sure. Its amazing that anyone escape for that place. I love the British film about the Wooden Horse and the clever plan that allowed those men to escape !!!! Looks like the film critics here gave it a thumbs down !!!! Guess we won’t see it in the West End as a play either ? Thanks for the reviews !

This Colditz thing was on ITV over Easter. I read the write-ups and decided to give it a miss as it sounded terrible…..

However, I see on his IMDb page he also recently played Jeffrey Archer, agggh!!!??
It was quite an amusing program. Basically it was a fantasy history of his life according to Archer himself including a seriously cringe worthy love seen between the charcter of Archer and M. Thatcher.

Terrible program with a most ludicrous storyline. As if the POW element wasn’t interesting enough, they had to introduce a most unbelievable love triangle to the mix.

There is a review on IMDb’s page http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0415407/
I haven’t seen it, but the review is pretty scathing, and I see it has Timothy West and James Fox, who have both appeared in some B grade British films (despite being thought of as A Grade actors). It also has Jason Priestly, hmm, oh dear.
Damien Lewis was superb in Band of Brothers, and he was equally superb in the TV play “Warriors” with Ioan Gruffud, about peacekeepers in Bosnia (where Damien used his natural accent, British).

It will be hard not to look at Damien Lewis and not think that Maj Richard Winters of the 506 E PIR 101st Airborne is a pow at Colditz ! He did a great job in Band of Brothers and no matter how his career ends up…its a winner in my book. Oustanding series indeed !
CURRAHEE!!!!!
