Hi Simon,
Definately over Eshott, one crashed at Burgham the other at Felton,
Now it could also be pilot baled out and landed at felton.

possible, Provost, or Meteor, no casualties.

Hi Chris

I’ve had a quick trawl through ‘Broken Wings – Post War RAF Accidents’ and can’t see anything that tallies 100%. I did come across the following collisions in the region in the 40s, 50s and 60s:

13/12/45 – 2 x Spitfire LF.9 (BS242 & BS463), collided East Castle, Co Durham, both pilots OK.

29/4/52 – 2 x Meteor F.4 (RA480 & VW298), collided Lower Dinsdale, Co Durham, both pilots killed.

19/8/52 – 2 x Meteor NF.11 (WD714 & WD772), collided 3 miles NE of Stanhope during night interception, 1 crew member killed.

14/8/62 – 2 x Provost T.1 (XF684 & XF903), collided 1.5 miles W of RAF Ouston while overshooting at night, 2 crew killed.

And there is the wartime collision between the P-47 and the Spitfire which did occur over Eshott on April 12th 1944 in which the American P-47 pilot and the Norwegian Spitfire pilot were killed.

Of course none of these tally, so it may have been civil planes, or non-RAF jets…???

Regards

Simon
