Started out the day hoping to go spotting at DUS, a L’Avion 757 was expected and I had hoped to get a shot at it. Alas, the observation deck at DUS was closed due to snow. So I drove a bit further down Autobahn A3 and ended up in Cologne. Here the observation deck was closed as well. Even the top floor of the parking garage C was closed of!
Only option left, other then driving another 2 hours down the A3 to Frankfurt, was to set myself up at the passage between terminal C and D. The view is good, but through glass. The whole of the cargo area (arguably the main atraction for spotters with both DHL and UPS based at Cologne) can not be seen from here. Waiting to see the cargo planes come in is not really an option. Since DHL and UPS are overnight couriers most of their flights come in too late for photography. In summer you can have good days, but the shorter winter days do not help.
Only a single UPS MD-11 was seen coming in. Also interesting was the Germanwings logojet.

Some nice crisp light there. Nice stuff. I quite like the GermanWings special livery. Something different at least.

The UPS will hve been the WAW-CGN it leaves warsaw between 9:15 and 10am it then returns in the afternoon arriving in WAW around 5:15-6:45pm.
Sorry, I think you are mistaken about this flight. The MD-11 arrived around 14:50 at CGN. I must have just missed the arrival from WAW as I arrived at CGN around 11:30.
Do you know if there is a website with information on UPS’s flight schedules? I have been looking for quite a while to find out the optimal time(s) to go spotting at CGN, but never found anything.
