I’ve seen a number of WWII RAF cockpit photos with the control yokes painted as green. Was this standard practice during this era and if so anyone tell me when it was first adopted and when it ended. Also does anyone know the primer colour for yokes or grips during this period of time.
I ask as I am currently gently sanding back a yoke and have come across the colour green underneath the current (silver) paint scheme. I wondered if this green was the original colour at the time of use or the primer colour which I have come across. Many Thanks.

You can get it in a rattle can from light aero, I borrowed a can of the Spit guys as I’d ran out of my primer, they use it in the cockpit.

When cleaning my Halifax control column it was painted aluminium, but underneath it had traces of interior green paint on it.

Thanks Ian, I hear that Norway is the place to be at the moment for WWII wrecks, a lot of good stuff coming out of this country.

Black and white photos aren’t much help with this! As far as wartime yokes go, I would suggest ‘cockpit’ green if not black plastic coated. The attached of a 1940 Blenheim yoke in Norway suggests so. https://ktsorens.tihlde.org/flyvrak/lysvollhaugen.html.
