I just found this lovely shot of a Tempest. Is this a genuine wartime photo? Or a postwar museum piece?

As you say Christer, it’s clearly a reversed and retouched image of the same aircraft; the petrol stain from the fuselage fuel tank is conclusive. As to why the markings have been removed… Certainly the ‘P’ and serial would be reversed, and obvious, but the roundel and serial wouldn’t need removing. Odd.

I noticed a rather unusually-marked Tempest in amongst those pictures.
Does anyone know why?
DazDaMan,
It looks like the Tempest Mk. VI prototype HM595, which had earlier served as the Mk V prototype. It’s still carries the long-barrelled 20 mm Mk. II Hispano cannons. Now also fitted with the wing root air intakes.
But the photo is reversed, note the pitot tube among other things. Was it because of censorship the markings is wiped out?

Sorry, don’t know where these Spitfires were taken, but EP120 is possibly at St. Athan. Both would be late ’60s/early ’70s, but I don’t recognise the locations.
Albert,
EP120 taken at RAF Henlow circa 18 April 1968, press day during prep. and build up for the BoB filming.

I posted most of these two years ago, but as we have a few forumites that may not had seen them here they are again.
Taken in Jersey by a friend of mine in 1967/68 during the filming of the Battle of Britain.

G-ASXX and LV633
The Lancaster is at Biggin Hill in May 1966 and the York is MY slide, which I took at Staverton on 31 March 1968 (I took 36 slides of this for Aviation Photo News, so this is one of those slides)

where, when ?
The Grumman Hellcat was taken at Lossiemouth 17 July 1969 before it moved to Yeovilton. The Heinkel He162 was taken at Chivenor, 7 August 1971 before it was moved to Hendon.

now these two are easy but they fit in this string
These two CASA 2.111s were taken at Bovingdon in October 1968, on completion for filming the “Battle of Britain” movie.

oh – the noisy variety….
The Meteor F.8 is at Abingdon June 1968 and the Boulton Paul P.111 was taken at Cranfield 2 September 1973 (it’s now at Coventry with Midland Air Museum)

Meteor NF.13
I helped to rescue this aircraft in 1990’ish.
It was laying dismantled on a farm in the West country, minus it’s centre section.
Unfortunately the group who got it, decided that after spending lots of money transporting it to Essex, and storing it for several years, they scrapped everything, leaving just the cockpit section!
It was a restorable airframe, the last of the NF.13 meteors produced.

Well, what an interesting thread I started last night, by accident. I had a feeling that was a postwar photo of the Tempest but wasn’t sure. Though I like it’s colour scheme nowadays, I much prefer its camo & stripey D Day markings.

That shot of EP120 – isn’t that while she was being made up for Battle of Britain? A very similar shot appears in one of Robert Rudhall’s books.

The Hellcat is the FAA Museum, when it were new – 60s?
The Heinkel would be the IWM one? So DX, early 70s.
The Firefly Drone would be in England. You can tell by the drizzle. 😀
