Coltishall Airshow / Open Day. 1969 / 70.

I have recently had the good fortune to have been given a collection of photos, scanned from slides, of an event at Coltishall, these were recorded on the slides as 1969/70 ! An interesting collection of aircraft and people, as you would expect from a personal photo albumn, these have not been tweaked in any way, so they are, in effect, straight from the camera of 1969 via a few pieces of todays equipment ! …… enjoy ? Keith.

Thanks for posting these———- Appreciated.

Every once in a while a set of really nostalgic pics. are posted here. These are in that category, the photographer caught it all beautifully.

I’m so glad my RAF Service was done over these times, I would not like to be in the RAF of today, no reflection on the serving personnel, but we seemed to be looked after so much better then, than they are now.

It’s also good that quite a few of these Aircraft in pics. are saved (Or parts of them ) The 4 FTS Gnats brought back memories of my time on them and the RAF Valley Air Shows we held over those times.

Show pics

A wonderful selection of pics, the relaxed atmosphere of the shows of those days really coming across.

Surprised not to see the RAF Phantom in the line-up, seeing as it will have been the newly-arrived pride of the Service at that time.

Once again I am overwhelmed at the responce to ” a few old photos” …. This helps with my point that there must be thousands of similar collections hidden out there !!! I rather think that some owners of those similar collections would look at them and think ‘nobody is going to want to see these’ ….. Well I hope this will help persuade them that our history is always worth recording somewhere !!!!!

Oh and welcome to the forum Ron Cake first post of many we hope !

Thanks all …..

Keith.

XB259 had G-AOAI allocated to it for the reasons you mentioned during the mid ’50s, and as you say never took it up.
XB260 became G-AOEK for use by the Iraqi Oil Company, however I don’t know how long it wore this or how successful it was in the role. Would love to see a picture in use with the civil reg.

The Beverley is definitely XB259. Court Line never got it flying because they ran into huge problems getting a C of A for civilian ops as the Beverley had never previously beeen certified and it would have been a very costly exercise to obtain certification. The only previous civil registered Beverley had been a temporary registration of an RAF aircraft which I think was for a sales tour or something similar which did not require full civil certification.

Coltishall Airshow – Date

A pedant speaks.

Nice Photos but I think they are from the September 1970 show, not 1969The Varsity shown is in the ‘new’ Training Command colours. As I recall, Varsities in these colours did not emerge from the paint shop (Little Staughton?) until early 1970.

The Varsity is probably WL 676 from the College of Air Warfare, Manby which appeared at Coltishall on 19 Sep 70

I was almost certainly there in short trousers. It was an annual pilgrimage and a reminder of very happy days……..

Lovely shots.

Just imagine how they would respond to the full PSP at high res on the originals. 🙂

As a special treat I’ve just arranged for a mini-album of Beverley photos to be hosted in this section http://www.newarkairmuseum.org/gallery.php of the museum website – photos of XL419 and XB261 – but please be aware that in particular photo 3 isn’t very nice!! 😡

Apologies for the poor quality of the 1977 images from the museum archive – not the best scans from Truprint lustre paper! 😮

Yep sorry my bad SF, I didn’t realise you were referring to the Beverley in the link of post #13 which is indeed ‘261, which explains how apparently the same aicraft was at two different shows on the same day!

Just in case we can’t open your link T/O, where is the cockpit displayed now?!:D

The cockpit of XB261 survives here!

Whilst the cockpit of XL149 (ex-Finningley) was saved by Newark Air Museum in 1977 and now resides at Aeroventure.

Correct

Your Correct – the other link was XB261, a different aircraft- shame the RAFM and RAF Finningley got rid of theirs.

SF, Im pretty sure the Bev is XB259, I can’t think of another that appeared in white with black under fusalage.
‘261 was still flying then aswel, but looked quite different.

I’m thinking that the Canberra is PR.7 WH774 of the RRE Pershore.

🙂 Lovely atmospheric photos.Normally i try and keep people out of my photos but actually looking at the stuff in the foreground is also historic now as well.
How you take things for granted then all of a sudden it’s history.

Not of course forgetting the traction engine…………!!!

Just wonderful pics of a bygone age but not so long ago….. Makes most of today’s shows look sterile…………
