Comet at Gatwick

Does anyone know the history of the white painted, wingless Comet that sits on a a remote stand at Gatwick Airport ? We taxied past it last night en route to Glasgow and it got me wondering.

RE: History of the comet at Gatwick…

It’s a big hangar immediately west of the furthest west stands. The hanger is currently in between the Trident and the viewing area but you can probably see it from the southern perimeter road.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-10-02 AT 12:53 PM (GMT)]This is the latest picture of the trident taken in Jan of this year… rotting away.

Notice the Shackleton Tails poking above the trees in the background, part of the Gatwick Aviation Museum.

I seem to vaguely remember hearing something about it being loosely reassembled somewhere else to be used as a film set.

Yep Dave you got the reg no. right, but it was dismantled in 2000, it was used by the Heathrow fire brigade.

Is that the sewage farm end Dave? Coz if it is, it probably aint there, as Terminal 5 building is underway.

That’s the one parked up by the perimeter road opposite the BA hangar, there’s also another one on the other side of the airport just the other side of the fuel dump.

T5 – I was taking the pi55 out of the old Death Cruiser 10. They had a dreadful dispatch rate at the end of their days (hence why they were replaced with A330’s). Whenever we saw one moving under it’s own power it was considered a great sense of achievement!

RE: History of the comet at Gatwick…

There’s approximately 27 Tridents still scattered around the UK, most of them are used for fire training, some have been restored and are on show at places like Duxford and Manchester Air Museum.

RE: History of the comet at Gatwick…

Sorry Wysiwyg,

I made a mistake. The photos which I am trying to locate were taken from a Britannia 767-300 last August (2001) althought I did fly both the JMC DC-10s back in 2000 – G-GOKT and G-LYON. Didn’t enjoy it one bit to be honest…

…how do you mean you thought they had gone tech??

RE: History of the comet at Gatwick…

Thanks for the info guys and great pictures too. How about this teaser… There was an old Vickers Viking parked at Glasgow Airport in the 80’s which was used by the fire training crews until it was moved to a museum in Dumfries I think?

Anyone know what became of her ? And also at Glasgow, an old Trident now in BAA colours. How many discarded Tridents do we think are lying around in the UK at the moment and wouldn’t it be nice to see some restorations going on?
