Comic Heroes

Just a bit of a laugh.
Something I mentioned on the Hurricane thread yesterday made me want to bring this up.
First of all we discussed Johnny Red from ‘Battle’ comic, a disgraced RAF pilot who flew Hurricanes with the Soviet Airforce, does anyone remember how he got disgraced and ended up in Russia, whether he spoke Russian and how he came to be accepted by the ‘Ivans’.
Have since found out his real name was Johnny ‘Red’ Redburn.
Then there was Matt Braddock VC and his trusty nav Sgt George Bourne, think they appeared in ‘Rover’ which later combined with ‘Adventure’, always used to arrive on a Saturday morning for some reason, but at least I could have a lie in and read it from cover to cover.
Matt seemed to mainly fly Mossies I recall, sometimes doing special missions in Lancs, then I remember he flew Beaufighters against the Japanese out of Burma, it always had to be at least 2 seats so that George was in there somewhere, he was a bit like the Digby character in Dan Dare, good old dependable erk.
Anyone know how Matt got his VC.
Then there was ‘Battler Brittain’, can’t remember what comic he was in or very much about him.
Anyone remember anymore, Dan Dare doesn’t count, though from memory he should soon be blasting off from Spaceport to go to Venus in order to alleviate Earth’s food problems, Mekon/A.Hitler beware.
Wonder if he ever got off with Professor Peabody.

Oops, sorry, just discovered a similar thread from last August, must have been on holiday at the time.

I wonder, has anyone ever read the wartime Australian comic in the same vane called Hurricane Hawk?

Might be worth something to a collector, depending on condition etc….

For sentimental sake, think might keep them. Pity as I threw out all my Battle and 2000AD comics and annuals.

I remember old Johnny Red and more importantly Killer Kane as had Warlord every week. Was even a member of the spyclub thingie (Peter Flint etc etc?) within its pages and remember winning a prize once in one of the weekly competitions. Still have all my Warlord Annuals. Wonder if they are worth keeping?

Let’s not forget Sqdn Ldr Paddy Payne of the Lion in the early 60’s. I think the Lion also had a cutaway drawing sourced from various places including Flight magazine and others..that was always torn out and kept along with the wonderful Eagle centre page cutaways by L Ashwell-Wood and later Roy Cross and others. Ah happy, uncomplicated days..
(well, apart from being 4 minutes away from nuclear annihilation at all times !!)

Johnny Red decked an Officer while in flying training. He fell down the stairs and died, Johnny was booted out. He was a crewman on a Cam ship that was sinking and took off himself, landing in Murmansk. Many issues later the officers brother came and joined the Falcons and started out to avenge him…..

For the first few years he was great, then the artist changed and the plot became pathetic…..

Re Comic Heroes

Yes, good old Matt Bradock appeared in the Rover in the 1950s and later. He was always making model aeroplanes, German aircraft, from cardboard. He flew bombers most of the time so he could hit back. Battler Britain: he used to feature in small comics under his own title, again 50s and 60s. I remember he put a German surface raider out of action with a string of molotove cocktails while flying a Walrus. I think he got in close because it was foggy!

Best Wishes.
Robert.

…then a few years later battle merged with Action, and went by the title of Battle Action for a while.

Actually it was called Battle Action Force for a while and I think it went back to just Battle when the Action Force toy range changed name.

I had hundreds of the comics and me and my brother had a large portion of the Action Force range. I still can’t believe I gave them all away when we moved house 🙁

i can still remember the exicement of thursday mornings, waiting for the paper boy to bring my comic, and being totally gutted if he was a bit late, and i had to go to school!
i started off with Valiant comic (i think, well it was something beginning with ‘v’), which was pretty soon amalgamated with Battle comic, then a few years later battle merged with Action, and went by the title of Battle Action for a while.
i’ve still got them all up my parents loft, and i think next time i’m home i’ll have to dig them out and get a nostalgia hit with ‘The Sarge’ , or ‘Spinball Wars’ , Panzer G-man, or jonny red…….ah yes, those were the days!

Also a story about an RAF pilot who was shot down and instead of being captured took the place of a luftwaffe officer. Naturally he caused ‘war winning’ mahem everywhere he went in Germany.

“Lofty’s One-man Luftwaffe”?

I recall, in Battle I think, one episode where he was asked to test-fly one of the German “Mistel” composite aircraft (Bf109 on top, Ju88 below), and ended up piloting the Junkers (it didn’t have the warhead in place, as I recall, and was a more-or-less standard ’88) towards a German tank column instead of the British one he was ordered to fly to before baling out. He told his commanding officers later that he’d launched the Ju88 from the Messerschmitt, then was shot down by the British but evaded capture. The wind had somehow caught the unpiloted bomber and blown it back towards the Germans…..

I loved those stories and the art work. – I still have 250 odd Commando books at home and some War, Air Ace and Battle ones too.
I also have some of the Annuals – every so often I take them down for a read… relive childhood times.

Commando Comics and there were Battle and War Comics as well.Think they still do Commando,s or they are reprints, great for a quick read while the missus watches one of “her” shows on the idiot box.Battler Briton I had one of his issues, had about 4 stories in it with a thing about the BoB in the middle of it.Killer Kane, yep and there was a heap of american stuff out too had WW2,korean War in them.Stuff like GI Joe and Kellies Heros.Still got a lot of them.Dropped a bag of my Commandos out to the museum a couple of weekends ago to go in the kids corner we have.Let the next generation enjoy them.Hmmm might make a call into the 2nd hand book store tomorrow.

I seem to remember a story called the ‘Wingless Wonder’ in Warlord about a swordfish floatplane that had lost its wings and went around pretending to be a some sort of MTD, in true comic book tradition it was able to do the unbelievable like knocking out Jap battleships with its machine guns.

Also a story about an RAF pilot who was shot down and instead of being captured took the place of a luftwaffe officer. Naturally he caused ‘war winning’ mahem everywhere he went in Germany.

Ahhh, great subject…
I was also quite partial to Cassidy who appeared in Warlord. Bit of a F4U Corsair ace if I remember rightly who never went anywhere without his New York Yankee’s baseball cap on . . . .
Excuse me while I run up to the loft to seek out my old Commando comics!

There was “Air Ace”, which I recall buying in about 1991/2 or thereabouts. Battler Britten featured in one or two of those.

I wonder if I still have my Commando/Air Ace comics lying around in the attic…? 😀

‘Killer’ Kane. Wasn’t he in Warlord or the Commando mini comic books?
I remember the story of the Meteor/Me262 dual he won, total rubbish but entertaining to me as a youngster.

I’ve got nearly all the issues of both Battle and Warlord in the attic of my mums house. Unfortunatey, I cut out a lot of the posters. Shame really, might be worth a few quid now.

Hi,

If memory serves me correct, Johnny Red was a pilot on a CAM ship on a Russian convoy. I think he decked an officer of the ships crew and thought he had killed him. He then took off, fought some Jerries and made for Russia.

I think the Battle and Warlord merged into one comic at one point, rather like the Scorcher and Score. Don’t get comics like those nowadays, probably not politically correct.

Alex
