Companies who Supplied Chemicals to Iraq

Apparently the UN has a listing of companies that Iraq says supported it’s chemical weapons programs from the 1980’s onward.

Most of the companies on the list are European including 7 German, 3 Swiss, 3 from the Netherlands and others including France, etc but non European as well including, India, Pakistian, etc, and 2 from the US.

Apparenty all the companies contacted so far have stated that the chemicals involved were just plan industrial items.

This story is related to a law suit in the US on behalf of Gulf War vets and involves Scott Ritter the former US UN arms inspector so who know were this might lead. It does seem connected to recent hints in a German publication than the German government was concerned about future revelations concerning German companies sales to Iraq.

U.S. imposes sanctions on Indian company

Thursday, February 20, 2003 Posted: 8:18 AM HKT (0018 GMT)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) — The United States has imposed economic sanctions on an Indian company and on a former resident of India for allegedly providing Iraq with material that could be useful in chemical and biological weapons programs, the State Department said on Wednesday.

Under a notice published in the Federal Register on Wednesday, the U.S. government has banned the importation into the United States of any goods produced by NEC Engineers Private, Ltd. or by Hans Raj Shiv.

The U.S. government will not enter into any contract for the procurement of any goods or services from the sanctioned persons and their successors, it added.

The register said the company was originally based in India but is now also operating in the Middle East and Eurasia. It described Shiv as previously residing in India and now believed to be in the Middle East.

“The penalties were imposed on these entities for knowingly and materially contributing to Iraq’s chemical and biological weapons program,” said State Department spokesman Richard Boucher.

Boucher declined to discuss their activities but cited Indian press reports that NEC sent 10 shipments including titanium vessels, filters, titanium centrifugal pumps, atomized and spherical aluminum powder and titanium anodes.

He said the sanctions did not affect the Indian government, which has launched its own investigation into the activities of the company and arrested two senior company executives.

“Unfortunately, NEC and Shiv have shifted operations to other locations. We hope our actions will support the steps that India’s taking and will encourage other governments to take similar steps,” the spokesman added.

The United States imposed similar sanctions on Shiv in July last year under separate laws for allegedly helping Iran or Iraq acquire chemical or advanced conventional weapons.

RE: Indian connection to Iraqi WMDs

“After many years of denying the existence of a chemical weapon program , India disclosed in June 1997 that it possessed chemical weapons.

Few details are publicly available concerning Indian chemical weapon stockpiles, although Chinese researchers suggest that India possesses 1,000 tons of chemical weapon agents, mostly mustard agent, located at five chemical weapon production and storage facilities.

Under the terms of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), which India signed in 1993 and ratified in September 1996, India must destroy 45% of its stockpile by 2004 and the remaining stockpile by 2007.”

Hi,

Huh!
that means I totally mis-interpreted your “cruisin’ for a bruisin'” -remark-
If you meant sanctions, then I say well India has gotten around sanctions in the past so as to not affect its citizens much, If you recall after Shakti(Nuke tests) we had a whole host of sanctions from the US, Japan(our largest aid-donor) and the UK and many more Euro countries, I dont see how they affected India in a very significant way. Many if not all of those sanctions have been removed now.

Re your many Indian companies have been sanctioned remark.

All I can say is a huh! again.

Who is backing Saddam ………

Prithvee:

>>>>>What int’l law is India violating by hosting Hamadi?

IMHO, India is violating the basic law of survival (of its own survival !).

Almost every major investigation into re-supply of WMD-related exports to Saddam during the 1990’s has exposed deep involvement of Indian companies and, at least, a blind eye by the Indian government.

If Saddam ever does use his WMDs against US/UK troops then Indians better watch out: we do not need to attack India. All that is needed is a mild statement by the State Dept that “persecuted regions of India (already comrising at least 14 well known and fully fledged freedom movements) have legitmate rights to self-determination.” The day that kinda statement comes out of the state Dept, within a few months, “Goodbye India and Hello new-Yugoslavia” …………..

As someone said, Indians are playing with fire by courting Saddam …….

That is the hub of the problem; that is how the pakistanis built-up their nuclear infrastructure during the 70’s – they bought most of the nuke-related “dual-use” machine-tools legit and in the open global markets.

In todays world, especially vis-a`-vis Saddam, no one is going to seriously accept the “utensils” argument if it can be shown that reasonable common sense would have alerted the Indians to Saddam’s real intentions regarding these exports.

>Also he says that there is no evidence
>of the eqpt being transferred to Iraq.

Well, if the equipment was ONLY for utensils & water pumps then the NEC lawyer has nothing to worry about, does he?

I do not think Rumsfeld was referring to supply of WMD materials to Saddam when he talked about France & Germany. May be you can correct me on that?

Why cant I edit my own post? anything wrong?

anyways, re the alleged involvement, NEC lawyer says that the eqpt exported can be used to make utensils, mobilephones and water pumps too. Also he says that there is no evidence of the eqpt being transferred to Iraq.

Has the Indian government taken leave of its senses?

When the rest of the world is avoiding Saddam’s henchmen like the plague, the Indian BJP government is smooching up to these mass killers?

How can we then expect the US to back us rather than backing pakistanis?

Me thinks coutries like India are being ……..how should I put it…… a bit “unwise”?

Saddam is gonna b gone sooner rather than later and “certain countries” do have rather long memories.

I’d say India is cruisin’ for a bruisin’ ………. in due course.

RE: Role of Indian companies in Saddam’s WMD program

The 50-page document – based on intelligence and United Nations inspectors’ reports – specifically named India’s NEC Engineers Private Limited as a supplier of some components.

The equipment, worth over $791,000, was exported between September 1991 and February 2001 and routed through Dubai and Jordan.

India has traditionally had friendly ties with Iraq and is opposed to military action against Baghdad. It has, however, urged Iraq to comply with U.N. Security Council resolutions on its weapons programmes.”

Indians are making a great mistake by cosying-up to Saddam Hussein:

“Speaking during a visit to New Delhi, India, Hammadi did not elaborate on what he meant by “every method.”

The U.S. government has repeatedly warned the Iraqi military not to use any chemical or biological weapons it may have against U.S. troops.”

RE: here we go again

india supplies iraq with chemicals to help their WMD program, big deal, put it on the back page in small print. china suppies chemicals to ‘iran/iraq’, goodness gracious me! thats headline news!

notice how it says ,’nine chinese companies are sanctioned for supplying iran and iraq’, chances are most if not all of the nine chinese companies sanctioned only supplied iran and not iraq. but we dont want to bother ourselves with such ‘trivial’ details. yet more ‘proof’ of how the chinese cant be trusted and are ‘evil’ in nature.

RE: Indian companies

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-01-03 AT 01:03 AM (GMT)]There is no logic in implying that Indian companies would deliberately try to subvert UN sanctions on Iraq.

We have yet to see something beyond mere press-leaks.
