Competition – Name the types.

Just cleaning up a few slides from the early 1950’s.

I was amazed at what was visible in the background here at Farnboro’ 1953.

From left to right 16 aircraft. Name the types.

The Swifts are WK194 and 198, flown by David Morgan and Mike Lithgow respectively that year.Amazingly 198 is still with us, now at Millom! For the first time all three V-Bombers were there in 1953 and there was a flypast by all four Avro 707s and two Vulcans.
The Gannet might be one of the Blackburn GR17s (YA7 & 8), WB781 and 788 which were still to be seen lying forlornly on the grass as late as 1958, although Gannet WN341 was there too in 1953.
Great photos Mark – the most evocative I’ve seen for a long while – more please!

Oo ah, yes missed the silver and blue ones! One of tails by the black sheds looks like the AW Apollo, but I wouldn’t put money on it!

Amazing shots Mk12, thanks for posting. Can’t add much apart from what looks like a pair of Avro 707s in the last shot.
I didn’t realise any Swifts appeared in that beautiful blue scheme, was it experimental PR colours or just a prototype thing?
Would also like to see more of the Victor proto!

Indeed two pairs, four in total.

Nothing more on the Victor unfortunately.

Not to mention a line up of fire engines that would make any enthusiast weep if they saw them together today! Isn’t that a KV-cab ERF at the end?

Plus, as someone else says, what I presume is the prototype Victor in an astonishing black, red and silver livery (this is in the pic from the other end) and three aircraft that look identical in shape but with different colour schemes – is that the Avro 707s? And what’s the big slab-sided thing on the left-hand edge?

Adrian

And a Seamew, over near the Victor. Not forgetting the Bev and the Skeeter.

The Bristol 173 will of course be G-ALBN. In the last photogrph the S51 is clearly visible (just above the head) left of centre.

Think Kev35 has it right as a Dragonfly if the year was 53, the first Widgeon did not fly until Aug 55……… Also seem to recall all the Widgeons were civil, the a/c in the photograph appears to be wearing a roundel.

I agree with Kev on his except:

I’d say the third one in was a Widgeon… 😉

deffo Sea Furies with that paint scheme and unlikely to be ‘straight’ Furies I would have thought

Good spot on the Gannet Kev – your eyesight is better than mine!?

They look like Swifts to me cant see an Attacker…

Not in any particular order and certainly without any differentiations betwwen different marks of the same type I see the following.

Belvedere
Sycamore
Dragonfly or Hoverfly
Two Marks of Swift
Two Marks of Fury or Sea Fury
Two Marks of Avenger
Gannet
Meteor
Vampire or Venom
Jindvik?
Attacker?

That’s as far as I can get and I doubt that half of those are right.

Regards,

kev35
