Computers

An other thread made me wonder: does someone know which langage(s) the on board and ATC systems are using for their sofwares?

Howdy,

I am a programmer. Essentially all computer languages are in English. Even GNU Assembly (low level) is in English. The wording in Pascal (teaching language) and C as in other languages or scripts (VB and Perl) use English keywords, ie put, move, goto (NEVER USE) etc.

Hand, it depends on the Air Traffic Control system. While at EGAA NATS in the tower they have a screen they use to update it. I got impression its a program used all over the world but doubt you will find out what it was written on!

Imagine…. “Ladies and gentlemen, unfortunately due to a technical error, the captain has requested that we all disembark the aircraft and stand on the tarmac while he reboots the plane. We can all get back on after. However any unsaved documents such as flight maps, menus and flight dynamics may be lost”

Well Hand, Boeing used ADA on the 777’s. http://www.adaic.org/atwork/boeing.html

Not sure about other aircraft but I would hazzard a guess that it would be a similar machine level language they would employ. Maybe even their own Application language, I dunno. I reckon it wont be visual basic onto a Windows platform ! Imagine the wonderful ‘Blue Screen Of Death’ on takeoff !!

Interesting q. I would assume that it is English as this is the International Standard for ATC and flying.

However if you are referring to the software language, then this could be any programme as they are all custom written applications.
