I’m trying to work out what year I was taken to the Farnborough Air Show as child. The reason for going was the appearance of a prototype Concorde (my father and I had never seen it) but by the end of the day the weather was appalling and instead of returning to Filton it divert to Heathrow…when we arrived home there it was parked at the end of the road! Only other thing I remember was the spectacular arrival of a Lightning in the morning.
I’m guessing it was 1970?

You are right, of course. It was an Eastern A/L one with BEA marks. I was confused because the Scramble site only has miliotary aircraft for 1972 and I can’t find my own note book.

Do you want the whole log for 1972?

The Tristar and A300 didn’t turn up until 1974

I did go in 1974 as well so I must be getting the two years mixed up – in my defence I was only nine in 1970. Anyway, here’s a photo my father took, which shows the the weather conditions quite nicely.

I can remember very little of Farnborough 1970 apart from sheltering in the car from the rain, and then getting out briefly for the Concorde. The weather was so bad it wasn’t visible until it was quite close to the crowd. I’m not sure if it did more than one pass – probably not. The only other aircraft I can definitely remember were a VFW-614, an Airbus A-300 and a Tristar.
My first Farnborough and certainly not the best.

I went on the Sunday and all I remember really was a very subdued display inc the VC-10 with an RB211 dodging below the low cloud base. It rained continuosly for most of the day.
I was 7 years old and it was my first display, I recall sheltering under a tree near a tank!

I clearly remember watching the last few displays that day from the car. The guy next to us decided that he would get a better view by standing on the roof of his car (wearing wellingtons!).
I saw him there then looked away….heard a muffled cry and a thud…turned back to look but he had gone – didn’t think anything of it. A few moments later he slowly appeared in our drivers door window pulling himself up on our door handle looking very dazed.
Almost 40 years later and I still remember that!

On the Saturday public show in September 1970 the weather for all of the morning and part of the afternoon was absolutely appalling. I remember standing under the wing of the Trislander prototype G-ATWU (still in primer) sheltering from the torrential downpour. I then went back to the coach park across Eelmoor Bridge to dry off and then at some point the skies cleared and G-BSST came across and the flying display continued.

G-BSST was there in 1972 but I don’t think it landed,
