Concorde at Newcastle – When?

I don’t normally venture into this section of the forum, and normally live in the Historic or Photographic sections, but I need some help for the date that Concorde first flew into Newcastle Airport.

This was prompted by finding two slides taken by my parents when they took me to see the aircraft for the first time. I’m guessing it was late 1970’s, but can’t find any record on the net. The two slides are attached.

Does anyone know which aircraft it was and where it is now?

Thanks

Steve

Did you read my initial reply…?:D

Yes, but you didn’t say how long that lasted.

So what about the colour scheme? When does that date the picture? A red top to the Fin, blue cheat line with no kick down at the forward end. How long was that scheme around and when was it replaced?

The first post BEA/BOAC merger British Airways (Negus & Negus) scheme was launched in 1974, the ‘British Airways’ titles reduced to ‘British’ in 1980, the entire livery re-designed by Landor Associates in late 1984 and generally rolled out in 1985. Concorde received it’s 3rd and final BA livery in 1997 with the Chatham Dockyard livery at the same time the rest of the BA fleet adopted the ‘utopia’ world tails.

I’d hazard a guess that it’s G-BOAA. I have a very similar photo, again at the hold to RW07, a/c parked in the same position, and that was G-BOAA around 1983 i believe ?

Cannot for the life of me find the photo but it was VERY similar to that one, i have the link to the same Concorde on the same day, but on approach. I will have to hunt out the one similar to yours though !! http://www.andy15star.fotopic.net/p51757291.html

Andy

And if it is G-BOAA then Vultee can be reunited with her, just up the road at the Scottish Museum of Flight at East Fortune near Berwick. 😀

The ‘British Red Tail’ colour scheme was introduced in June 1980 and replaced by the ‘Landor’ colour scheme in December 1984.

The white Ford Transit by the mobile staircase has the pre-1978 front end

It’s not very clear in the photo but I think that’s the later transit with the long indicators (rather than round) to the side of the headlights (rather than under), available from 1978 to 1986. Now who’s a white van anorak?

Did’nt the crash of the British Airtours 737 G-BGJL on 22 August 1985 at Manchester ground the 737 fleet so there was a sortage of A/C for domestic flights so Concorde was used for some?

That would be an excellent domestic upgrade!

Out of interest, does anyone know the reason for the series of Concorde movements in August and September 1985?

What it does prove… is that Mr Totty is a bit of an anorak, white van-wise!

Post-1978 Transits had bigger front indicators. I thought everyone knew that.

Since I was pretty young, the exact date didn’t stick in my mind, but I do recall that it was the first visit of Concorde, and a big fuss was made about it. With that in mind, it suggests it was G-BOAE on 27/08/1982 and 28/08/1982. I’d be 12 at that time, though I was sure I was younger than that. That was only about 6 months before the Vulcan arrived at Sunderland ( Jan 83 ), and I was sure the Concorde visit was a significant amount of time before the Vulcan.

There were quite a number of Concorde visits to Newcastle during the 1980s.

Do these dates jog anyone’s memory?

27/08/1982 and 28/08/1982 G-BOAE
28/08/1983 and 29/08/1983 G-BOAA
30/08/1985 G-BOAA
31/08/1985 G-BOAC
01/09/1985 and 02/09/1985 G-BOAB
03/09/1985 G-BOAC
08/09/1985 G-BOAB
05/10/1985 G-BOAA
07/10/1985 G-BOAB
09/10/1985 G-BOAF
21/05/1987 G-BOAG

The white Ford Transit by the mobile staircase has the pre-1978 front end and looks quite new, but that doesn’t necessarily prove anything.
I can’t give any advance on what’s already been suggested, so I’ll go with what Mr Vultee35 says.

Looking at the pictures, there’s a kid in the foreground in shorts and one of the ground crew is in a T shirt, so it could be warm, which would tie in with the Summer of 1980 or ’81. I would be around 10 to 11 back then. I thought I was younger, but it was a long time ago!

Any other ideas out there? Surely someone on here was there or worked at Newcastle at the time?

Well I can only say that as the aircraft carries the revised ‘British’ as opposed to ‘British Airways’ titlles, then it was not the late 70’s as this change was adopted from June 1980. As for the aircraft itself, it’s impossible to say without seeing the registration, I do know however that BA’s final Concorde delivery (G-BOAG) also took place in 1980 and was used on the odd promotional flight, including one to Glasgow in 1981.
