Galaxy
You were allowed to walk through the Galaxy and when you are 8 that was something amazing.
Here it is then, the Galaxy at Finningley 1980, doors open both ends. Should bring out your inner child andy.

I was stationed at Finningley in ’88, the newbie Aircrew Sergeants were in charge of car parking, I had 15 fresh-faced walking cones from Swinderby to help(?) me with mine!
Can’t remember much of the flying display as I had a female visitor for the weekend, so in between getting the cars in and then getting them out, I was mainly attending to her needs back in my house in Gatehouse*:diablo:
I remember not getting all the cars out by the time it was dark, and also sitting by the runway threshold on the Sunday watching departures, including the U2 which was very impressive.
*Gatehouse was the old MQs on camp where the newbie Sergeants lived, see here for a flavour of the ‘culture’:

1980 yep i was there, what a day that became, nearly nothing flew although i can seem to remember that the tornado f2 prototype displayed in the murk. You were allowed to walk through the Galaxy and when you are 8 that was something amazing.
It was a real shocker- Tornado showed its wheels through the cloud, a Sea Harrier hovered a bit and IIRC the Blackburn B2 flew around in the gaps. A real shame as it was to have been the last display by the RN Blue Herons Hunter team.
I remember the day well, it chucked it down – so much rain that the show stopped. Even the BBC packed up early. I remember they also had an airworthy Gannet
1986 was a glorious day – with a rare display by a Viggen. I think it must be 1987 you’re referring to, a horrible day that got worse as the day went on, causing the SR71 (only RAF display appearance) to be shelved 😡

I remember Finningley 1986 and still have two rolls of Eastman 7291 16mm to process.
I hired a Bolex H16 cine camera for the day and scrounged some “short ends” from BBC Leeds (in the days when everything was shot on film). I remember the day well, it chucked it down – so much rain that the show stopped. Even the BBC packed up early. I remember they also had an airworthy Gannet. Never got the film processed. I wonder if there is anything on the film after all this time? A few months ago I processed some old 35mm film taken in the mid 1980s and the images were still good.
A few months ago I also contacted the BBC about securing the rights to a number of aviation related programmes (obscure documentaries and airshows), to put on DVD. The only problem is that the BBC will only issue material if you sub-title. This is very expensive and considering the low-demand (maybe only 200 copies), it wasn’t viable. Maybe one day, the BBC might pull its finger out and (as promised) place their entire archive online.

Lets face it, all the Finningley shows were pretty special, though the weather didnt always help – anyone remember the great fog of 1980?! 😮

I seem to remember that there were several years when Concorde was there but can only prove one. I even surprised myself by finding this 🙂

Ahhhhhh Finningley!
Concorde was indeed at finningley in 81, also in 86 and 87 according to the old programs I have just dusted off. 81 was THE show though, Lightning display culminating with a high speed low pass as the first of the four Vulcans began to roll. Those were the days! Anyway, thought these may be of interest:-

Concorde Finningley
Hi
I was fortunate enough to be on board F-BTSD on a trip from Finningley to Paris which was part of their show on 07/09/85 ,it was a supersonic flight which if I remember correctly routed towards the Whitby area & then in a wide arc at mach 2 over the north sea back towards Paris . Has anyone got any pics of the take off or flyby which could be scanned or are there any other members that experienced that flight ?

Hello
I Think it was around 1981 as I did not have a driving licence then! It may have been the first time it had landed at Finningly? I do not remember it comming back year after year? But I could be wrong………….

I think Concorde visited in 1979 or possibly in 1986 (which was rained out – even the BBC gave up filming the event). I still have two rolls of 16mm Colour Eastman 7291 film from 1986 that still need processing.

I seem to remember G-BSST displaying at Finningley as early as 1972 – 74?
Brian Trubshaw was clearly having great fun, as his first pass was on exactly the same trajectory as the four Hunters which had just blown up the carboard fort, the act before! 😀
I’ve got some picture somewhere, will try and find and scan the necessary slides tonight!

Concorde visited Finningley in 1989 – seem to remember it being sunny but cold (Finningley BoB Display was always cold!!). Used to be a great airshow…
Try checking Scramble for other appearances. http://www.scramble.nl
