Concorde gets airborne again

This afternoon, Saturday 29 September 2012, Concorde again took to the skies.
Actually was the 40% scale model ‘G-CONC’ when at last being relocated from Brooklands Museum to be the ‘gate guardian’ at the entrance to the museum and Mercedes-Benz World on Wellington Way.

It was lifted by giant crane over the fence onto a low-loader at the end of the excellent ‘Aviation Day’ at the museum.

Look out for it when next you come to visit.

It looked so much better in its heyday. But I am pleased the spirit lives on!

Talking of Spirit, it was pleasing to be invited to the opening by Prince Michael of the “Pratts” pavilion a couple of years back, and really nice to see it restored to its former glory.

Despite rampant development round-and-about, Brooklands is still a special place.

But here’s Brooklands in its heyday!

Well, keeping to the Concorde model theme, here is a very similar view taken June 2011 during the ‘Double Twelve’ event. You can still see the car bays & Pratt’s fuel outlet, now with the Concorde model.

Concorde gets airborne again

hi,
any reports of the airday? t mentioned on the offical site “visiting aircraft by invitation only” so what was invited?

regards
jack…

This is a little ‘off the topic’, but may be of interest Jack.

The ‘Aviation Day’ at Brooklands on 29 September was a celebration of the aviation activities on the site – it was not just a motor racing track as the creation of a ‘flat’ area in the middle became a natural location for flying. The Concorde model relocation at the end was not part of the event.

The grass strip there is actually on the land belonging to Mercedes-Benz and has limited length so, as I understand it, the ‘fly-in’ had to be limited to four microlights and one helicopter. Also there was a display by a Tiger Moth and a DH60 Moth in the afternoon and some of the museum’s aircraft and the Napier-Railton car had engine runs. Have a look at a few of my pics on:
https://picasaweb.google.com/joe90.06/AVIATIONDAYAtBrooklandsMuseum29Sepember2012#

This is the first time the strip has been used, other than by helicopters, since the Vimy was flown in in November 2009.

The date for next year is already set for 28 September!

Hope this of value = Joe90

Concorde gets airborne again

If anyone wasn’t already aware – there’s an excellent Video on Youtube showing the move including the positioning on it’s final plinth in darkness 😮

And it is now on full display at the Brooklands/Mercedes-Benz World entrance, just as it used to look at the tunnel entrance to Heathrow. (Photo thanks to Julian T)

DragonRapide, you are right. That’s a brilliant view. As a bonus to that, a little bit to the right, I can see the grass runway of the local glider airfield. That normally makes my day when I am not flying around in our nice little Robin HR-200.

Seen that kind of ‘flight’ twice a couple of years ago and can see the Concorde together with the Concordski from my balcony every day now. 😀
