Concorde in New York

Just got back from a few days in New York and though you might like to see a couple of quick pics of poor old G-BOAD. I say “poor old G-BOAD” because I’m far from convinced that plonking this magnificent machine on a barge in the Hudson River is the best way to preserve her.

Anyway, the first pic is taken from the deck of USS Intrepid looking down onto the jetty and ‘Concorde barge’ tied alongside.

I though they were going to put a “glass roof” over the Concorde.

I heard that one as well. Was it not that those bidding for Concorde’s had to provide a suitable environment for storage and display of it. For all that BA made a PR diaster out the retirement, it would be worse if they were responsible for disposing of their waste in any old place!

Thanks Mark – nice to finally put a ‘jet to the serial’ 🙂
She doesn’t look that bad from your photo, but give it a few years 🙁

Well these photos were taken last Saturday (28th Feb). They had about 19″ of snow five weeks ago which, as you can see, had all melted by the time I got there.

G-BOAD wasn’t protected from it in any way but I don’t suppose it would do any more harm than the “wet” environment she’s constantly residing in now. The Concorde ‘exhibit’ isn’t actually open to the public yet so I certainly hope andrewman is correct and that they will build some sort of roof over the top.

New York has of course a reputation with airliners in the city centre… (we used to have a devil icon in the old forum, i really wish we had it again).

Stringbag – Scimitar piccie from Intrepid as promised. Sorry it’s not up to much and apologies for those pesky people spoiling the view – it was quite busy that day so this was the clearest shot I could get.

I still can’t imagine what the FAA Museum were thinking when they swapped this rare aircraft for a Phantom (which they later got rid of) – seems that Intrepid came out on top in that deal.

The Scimitar just looks so out of place amongst the American aircraft on Intrepid’s flight deck, and it hasn’t even got a tail number painted on 🙁

I am going to be in NY in August for 5 nights so hopefully time allowing I will get to the Intrepid – I’ll take some snaps then to see if her situation is any better.

I still have this vision of her being used as a very high speed sightseeing vessel for trips around the Hudson and Liberty Island!! Mind you, strike out the D in her registration and what do you have? G-BOAT 😀

I’ve taken a good look at a B-52 in Orlando, FL that has been parked about 20 years has severe sheetmetal and structual damge due to the salt air and Orlando is several miles from the sea. The Concorde wont last any time where it is now. It will be taking a (mist) salt bath daily.

Last I herd the Scimitar was going to have a repaint.

I bet she hasn’t been given any anti-salt water corrosion protection. Watch her disintegrate – rapidly.

Stringbag – Yes, I’ve got one shot of the Scimitar. It’s not a very good one I’m afraid but I’ll post it when I get home this evening.

Did you take any photos of the Scimitar Mark?

Great photos of BOAD, I hope it remains in that condition for a long time to come.

I think the only reason Concorde is stuck on the barge is to make a nice advert for BA.

I tried to take a few shots of BOAF at Filton last week, she’s conveniently parked alongside the A38, just behind the post office terminal, could just see her nose poking out from behind a line of bright red Sherpa’s.
