Its all gone horribly quiet around here, so I presume that the BBMF move to Barkston happened as planned last week…
One thing – anyone know what happened to the 2-seater Spit that was lurking in the hangar.. I saw it parked o/side a few times, and the guide on the last hangar tour I did said that the BBMF were ‘sorting it out’ on the owners behalf?

So do we know how long MJ627 is going to be lodging at East Kirkby? Weeks / months / as long as it takes to get Coningsby’s runway done?

……and this is the Spit, Lanc, Queen Mary and Paul Day (in the cockpit) at East Kirkby. This is soon after I’d got out of the Lanc after the taxi ride. What a day!!!

If you’re at the museum in the summer, they do an excellent tour of the old airfield using a Queen Mary transporter. You all get in the back with a guide who talks to you about the field as you drive gently around. I did it last year and would recommend it highly.
You can see how a large section of the main runway is still there. The only problem for high speed taxi runs is that there isn’t a permanent runway between it and Just Jane’s hangar. Maybe something for the future ?
Excellent that the Panton brothers have got a second plane, even if it is on temporary loan !

yep I understand that theres a reasonable amount of the original runway still there…. it was used by crop sprayers and light a/c in relatively recent times… the top end of the extension (east end of the airfield) is still in quite good condition – used for bike drag racing 3 or 4 times a year… unfortunately its cut off from the rest of the airfield by a minor road! last time i was up there watching the bikes there was a Robin which appeared to be doing engine runs (thats a Robin as in french, small, single prop not Robin, red-breast, flapping wings, worm eater)…
glad you enjoyed sitting in on the taxi run… I enquired about that recently but must admit the price put me off .. I may have to treat myself at some stage though..
Neil (cheapskate!)

I understand that it flew in; using the remaining piece of runway; this is a post-way extension to the East Kirkby runway built for the USAF. The Lancaster used it for its high speed taxi runs a couple of years ago. Speaking to the people at East Kirby the Spit hasn’t joined their Museum, but they are looking after it in their hangar for the owners. Which is rather decent of them.

i wonder how it got to East Kirkby? road or air?
seems odd to move it to East Kirkby if she is to continue as a flyer.
best regards, steve

I’m assuming that the Spit was MJ627. It’s now at East Kirkby, or was a couple of weeks ago when I was there. Pay Day OC BBMF turned up to run the Spit up.
I was there for a Lancaster taxi run and I was on board. Got to stand behind the Pilot. I can only say it was BRILLIANT!!!!!
