consecutive squadrons in formation

Back in the late sixties while on a tour in Akrotiri (103 M.U. to be precise), I have memories of seeing an unusual formation in the skies over Akrotiri. Why unusual you ask, because it consisted of four aircraft from consecutively numbered squadrons. These being a Phantom of 54 Sqdn, a Victor of 55 Sqdn, a Lightning of 56 Sqdn and another Victor of 57 Sqdn. Allowing that it would be unusual to see four squadrons together what would be the chances of a formation being allowed yet alone flown. Can anybody figure if any other sequence of squadrons does exist and has any other such formation been flown.
On futher thought there is 7 Sqdn Chinooks, 8 Sqdn AWAC, 9 Sqdn ? and10 Sqdn VC 10, that would be a sporting one to set up! Any more suggestions welcome.

You could have had XIII, 14, XV, 16 and 17 sqns all flying Tornados back in the early 1990s. The time window for 14, XV, 16 and 17 would have been even bigger, with all of them being part of RAF Germany as well.

Even more so, if you’d manage to throw a Chinook into the mix, you could have one of those from 18sqn, a Phantom from 19sqn, and yet another Tornado from the 20th. All RAFG.

Bring in some UK-based units, and you could add 8, IX, 10, 11 and 12 sqns too… but that probably is a bit unrealistic 🙂

Being at Laarbruch on 16 from 83 to 87 we had XV and 20 all together so that would have been easy but the bruggen squadrons weren’t so easy.
The Argosy squadron at Akrotiri was 70 which changed to Hercs during my time there but at the beginning of my tour we still had the VIP Hastings, ( WD 500 if I remember correctly),on the M.U. before it went for a fire hulk and the VIP Argosy ( I think ** 444), for some reason they didnt consider trying to do a VIP Herc! WE did do a VIP herc during the Rhodesian Commonwealth Monitoring period for Lord Soames after the Andover provided couldn’t manage the altitude and temperature but the cutlery kept vibrating off the Beverley tables that were used.

10 Sqn was disbanded in 2005

In October 2005, 10 Squadron disbanded at RAF Brize Norton and its aircraft transferred to No 101 Squadron.

I guess they didn’t want 48sqn to join them in their flypast?
and wasn’t there an Argosy sqn. at Akrotiri as well in ’69?
