Hello all,
Last night the Aviodrome (at Lelystad Airport, the Netherlands) had the engines run of several historic aircraft, including those of Lockheed C-121A Constellation N749NL. The Connie has recently been fitted with a new no. 3 engine (an ex-MATS Connie engine), which performed well. According to Aviodrome-staff, the Connie is set to fly in March/April 2007.
Some pictures of the engine runs can be seen at my photo-album http://www.flickr.com/photos/64649127@N00/.
Best regards,
Michiel Harmsen

I guess they suck the money out of their visitors!
That’s a prejudicial remark. Would you like to elaborate? You might note another poster, ‘mennie’ felt it was OK to vent some bile earlier without any back up and to date, despite a request, has failed to substantiate his/her views. Yet again, a couple of thoughtless or bitter remarks seek to attack a museum which is available to all, and, IMHO does a good job. Of course, you know better, right?
Not impressed.

I visited Aviodrome earlier this year and was very impressed. My thought was, where do they get the money… It must be state funded?

Let’s hope the Connie can come to the UK for an air show in 2007. She was due to appear at Biggin Hill and possibly Duxford, but was grounded at the last minute with these engine problems! Good news Michael – many thanks! 😎

…the Aviodrome does not seem to care much about their visitors and the people who contribute (by buying a ticket etc.) to the museum and its collection.
I’d disagree, having had an A1 experience when visiting. I don’t think it’s perfect; there are things I’d change or do differently, but it’s a) better than the Aviodome, and b) a world class facility that the Dutch should be proud of. In terms of aviation museums, I’d say this and the MLM Museum at Soesterberg mean that Holland’s punching well above it’s weight in terms of the quality of the facilities.
However, you obviously have a different view – care to share?

I don’t think the Aviodrome is ever going to have something of their own collection in flying condition.
As BlueRobin says, AVGAS is way too expensive at Lelystad.
And Roger S example, the Aviodrome does not seem to care much about their visitors and the people who contribute (by buying a ticket etc.) to the museum and its collection.

No, the aircraft will be used for display flying only. According to the FAA Registry, the airworthyness certificate of N749NL has the classification ‘experimental’ and it’s in the category ‘exhibition’.

So what’s the deal. Do they plan to give rides like the PBY guys, or is that not an option with the Dutch CAA?

I agree Roger, it was very annoying indeed. Many of my shots were ruined that way, but I managed to take some clear one’s. Shame you left though; you should have stayed for just the sight and sound of the Connie by night…

PS That’s right Roger, I’m a ‘Leienaar’ as well…

Just had a look at the pics. Very nice indeed. Bet she sounded marvelous and I wish I could have been there to hear it.

Good to hear Michael, she has been out of the skies for too long following the restoration. I landed ahead of this Connie just before she departed Manston. The crew held at the holding point, 4 bright chrome spinners glinting in the Kent sunshine… We later had a very nice meal at Midden Zeeland airfield 🙂
I hope given Lelystad’s expensive AVGAS, the Connie people get a good discount!
