Constellation News

Just found an interesting site with some good news about the Lufthansa Constellation restoration- they’ve almost finished the restoration Hangar and parts have been coming off the donor aircraft ready for overhaul- The Dutch ‘Connie’ appears to be mired in red tape concerning the crew though-a real shame, hope they can sort it out- http://www.conniesurvivors.com/1-connie_news.htm

Don’t have a Lufthansa one – but here’s a shot of KLM L1049G Super Connie PH-LKE ‘Pegasus’ at Changi 11th March 1962. It was involved in a swop of captured soldiers with the Indonesians after a bit of conflict in West Irian.

Some worrying news about an EC-121T 52-3417 in Aircraft Illustrated -it was flown into a University in Montana (big campus!) from DM in 1981 but is now ‘surplus to requirements; -they are keen to see it go to a good home, but they want it moved asap

Work is progressing well on the restoration of the Constellation and parts are being sent to Germany for refurbishment.

Old Shuck. thank you, I can’t realy say where these photos were taken as I think they are from a few prints I bought years ago at an aerojumble or boot sale, I did visit Skyways hangars at Stansted, usualy as a passenger in the British Rail parcel delivery Scammel scarab articulated lorry !!! maybe 55 years ago aged 5 or 6 !!!
I have this shot of Yorks which seems to be the same place I think ?
I am sure there will be someone along soon who can help.
Keith.

Sexy or not ? In my opinion the most sexy piston engined aircraft ever ? Don’t know where I got this photo from ! could be Bovingdon or Blackbush ? Certainly a part of my youth at Stansted were these beauties with Skyways, always remember the huge length of the, slightly off set from centre, nose wheel leg, look at the steps not quite reaching the doorstep ?
This is a mere L-749A but still beautiful in my humble opinion ! Keith.

I have to agree, best looking airliner of all time. Beautifull in TWA livery.
Just spotted this on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Unused-aircraft-tyre_W0QQitemZ270283931913QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item270283931913&_trkparms=39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Agree with your first sentence, does your second sentence have any relevance to the subject?

Just for the record, the Lufthansa “Connie” is actually an L-1649A Starliner (N7316C).

I can recall seeing the odd Lufthansa Starliner at LHR in 1961/62 (I was young then!) but did they ever operate any other type of Connie?

Yes. They resumed long-range post-war services about 1956 with L-1049G Super Constellations with tip-tanks (short range they had Daks, then CV-440s then Viscounts)

My memory of the Starliner at LHR in the 50s is that it leapt off the runway whereas the earlier models seemed to climb slowly

Wright R3350s – it’s a very sexy aeroplane, but aiui from a former head of BAe Sales (S America) prone to fish-tailing.

Dutch Connie

Just a couple of pics from two weeks ago. Nice to be able to get on board and have a look around. Would love to see her in the air though.
