I didn’t think it was supposed to be within 2 hours of each other. I believe one flight was supposed to depart BHX in the morning and one in the afternoon and the same across the Atlantic I think

Within two hours of each other? that doesn’t make sense in the terms of frequency. It does sound like they need more capacity.

CO-ck up?

I see from the timetables that CO have two flights departing BHX to EWR within 2 hours of each other both using B752’s – are they doing this because of lack of bigger aircraft, does anyone know? Surely it would make more sense to operate a single flight using a B777 instead of 2 B752’s?

Makes BHX sound like it’s on the way up the airport league table, although i doubt it will ever catch up to MAN.

Ok, granted. But thats not exactly a shceduled passenger service.

You need to a gold plated wallet for that service!

It is a scheduled passenger service… and you don’t need a gold plated wallet, either, just a Corporate Credit Card… 😉

That third picture is at BHX.
CO is going to have a second daily flight? Starting when?

I have taken this from the web, the article is old as i think it was written last year when it was announded:

‘Birmingham International Airport (BIA) today welcomed the announcement by Continental Airlines that it will launch a second daily non-stop service between Birmingham and New York/Newark from 15th June 2004. Together with Emirates’ recent announcement that it will introduce a second daily service to Dubai from March this year, the addition to Continental’s schedule re-affirms BIA’s status as the Midlands global gateway.

Richard Heard, Managing Director of Birmingham International Airport, said, ‘We are delighted that Continental Airlines has chosen to expand its Birmingham operation. There are over a million people living within an hour’s drive of our airport that regularly travel to the USA by air. Previously, only 15% of those people have used Birmingham Airport to start these journeys. This additional daily service will make it more convenient and give the Midlands’ business and leisure traveller greater opportunity to access not only New York, but the whole of America from Birmingham. This will also compliment our existing long haul services to the Middle East, Indian sub-continent, East Africa, Asia and Australasia.’

‘We look forward to working with Continental Airlines to make this second operation as successful as its current service, which has carried approximately 700,000 passengers since it started in 1997’.

The new flight, CO33, will depart Birmingham daily at 12:15 p.m., arriving at New York/Newark Liberty Airport at 3:00 p.m. the same day. The return flight, CO32, will depart New York/Newark daily at 9:50 p.m., arriving at Birmingham at 9:35 a.m. the following day. This development means that Birmingham Airport will become the only UK airport outside London to offer a twice-daily service to the USA with Continental Airlines.

Commenting on the additional flights to both New York and Dubai, John Edwards, Chief Executive, AWM said, ‘These developments reinforce the vital role of Birmingham International Airport as the international gateway to the Midlands. As Birmingham Airport expands and flourishes, so the region becomes the natural choice for ambitious businesses looking to partner with an ambitious region. We congratulate both airlines for this demonstration of their continued commitment to the Midlands.’

In 2003, 30% of all passengers using long haul services from Birmingham Airport travelled onward, using connecting flights, to other destinations. This is expected to increase with the introduction of Continental’s additional service, as it will enable even more convenient connection opportunities to some 170 destinations throughout the Americas.

The new service, like the existing one, will be operated by Boeing 757 aircraft, seating 172 passengers – 16 in the award-winning BusinessFirst cabin and 156 in Economy.

BHX

In 2003, 9,083,101 travellers used Birmingham International Airport, an increase of 13% on the previous year.

BIA is the UK’s second largest airport outside London, the third largest for charter travel, and the UK’s fifth largest overall.

In May 2003 the Airport was rated 20th for overall passenger convenience in IATA’s leading survey of the world’s best airports. BIA was the only UK airport to be listed in the analysis of passenger satisfaction. Additionally, in January 2003 the Airport was voted ‘Best Business Terminus’ in the Business Travel World magazine awards.’

Anyway, this isn’t the first time a 757 is used for trans atlantic routes. Infact, I believe the 757 is the most common single aisled twin used on regular trans atlantic flights, if not the only.

They should keep the 777 on the MAN route. Relative just came home on it, said it was full to the top, and that was on a Tuesday!

Well CO already operate the 757 from BHX, and AA operate one from MAN so its not completely unheard of.

No it’s not unheard of but it’s still a long way to the USA from the UK in a single aisle plane, especially when you are bursting for a p*ss and the aisle is full of cabin crew and trolleys.

Incidentally the GLA route used to be a 757 all year round, it’s now a 764 in Summer and a 762 in winter. Perhaps the 757 will return in the winter, we’ll keep our eyes open on the EDI impact for that one I guess.

I remember in the mid-1990s Excalibur occasionally used A320s for charters to Florida (via Bangor) though I’m not sure if anyone uses the type at present

Back on topic.

CO are apparently using a 757 on the EWR-EDI route as an experiment. If the load factors add up they are purportedly planning a 767 service and if that excels the possiblilty of a 777.

Anyway, this isn’t the first time a 757 is used for trans atlantic routes. Infact, I believe the 757 is the most common single aisled twin used on regular trans atlantic flights, if not the only.

I’d say on the ground is your best chance.

The best thing to do is contact CO and ask them what their policy is.
then, regarldess what you hear from them, ask the cabin crew as you’re boarding that you’d love an in flight visit. They still happend, so you never know 😉

Lets hope the CO pilots are friendly on the way back to BHX, maybe they’d give me a pic on the ground?
