Continental W670

Good Morning from Belgium

It’s my first post on this forum, i am french speaking , please apologize for my weak english
I collect stationary engines since very long and like nice mechanics
Is it anybody here who know Continental engines W670 ( radial 7 cyl ) please and who would agree to correspond with me for technical infos
I had the chance to find 2 engines forgotten in a shed since 50 years, they are badly corroded outside
One is broken (master rod ) and the other one in good condition but bloked by sticky oil
I want to run it on a stand and actually my engine is fully dismantled , under cleaning , rather difficult
The 2 magnetos have been cleaned and checked and they give both a beautifull spark
I will change the bearings soon and will start the rebuild
I look after a carburetor and a test propeller
Any adress or contacts will be appreciated
Thank you very much
Roland

Roland I cannot message you as you do not have enough posts. Contact me at d.layneATmchsiDOTcom and I will put you in touch with the right people at Continental.

Thank you David , Steve and Flying pencil, in the other side of the world
Being novice in this type of engine , not easy here in Belgium , where i feel very alone ,
i am now trying to find informations about a test propeller to run the engine on a stand , size , number of blades and so on
I have gather some period leaflets near Avialog , but not always easy to understand American english, many technical words are unknowned for me,
also i find difficult to understand how to ajust exactly the camshaft disc with the accessory case to have a correct setting
I will contact you David , many thanks
I have learn also that in France many Morane Saulnier have been remotorized with the W670 ,in the sixties , now called MS 317 ,easy to find on the net
You might think that i am crazy , but when removing the first cylinder, i had great difficulties to remove it , playing several hours with levers , screwdrivers , wood block and hammers and so on , then i decided to use compressed air and protecting carefully each cylinder , it did work perfectly without any damages, they did land safely in the soft grass in my garden , see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8taWa2kT67c :love-struck:
Thanks again
Have a nice day
Roland

You can also try contacting Continental Motors, they are still in business, may be able to help.

Some companies like hands on advertising. If you advertise their company on your engine they may sponsor (give some money) your work, worth asking.

Hi Roland,

Welcome to the forum.

The w670 on the front of my Stearman works really well, but I always find that for spares or general info I have to look to the USA. Air Repair are good, Dusters and Sprayers also, Rare Aircraft and the Stearman Restorers Association are all good contacts as well.

Most of the manuals can be found on the net as well if you look hard enough.

All the best,

Steve
