Grey Area,
I often wonder what would have become of Filton had it become the main airport for Brsitol and the South West and not Lulsagte too. It would have been an ideal location, rail links, motorways quite near to the City but not too near to be a problem and the runway was already built there! They were stupid not to take that excellent opportunity back then. I suspect Bristol International Airport would be about the same size as Birmingham now to be honest. Also as Spence CWL said it was not on a hill which leads me into my reply to SpenceCWL
The CO flights are in the morning around 07:30. Yes, Bristol Airport is on a hill and suffers from bad weather rather frequently but it has a state of the art CAT III landing system so this should not be a problem for the a/c. CWL and EXT are thr main relief airports for BRS and sometimes FZO (Filton).

Have the timings been announced? If there are morning flights then there might be problems. Apparently BRS has a terrible weather record and many morning flights get diverted to CWL because the fog at BRS is so bad. If the main passengers on this route are travelling for buisness then delays like that are no good;it could result in someone missing an appointment in NY or something!I know it sounds stupid but if you are a buisnessman travelling to NY to discuss one of the most important buisness deals of your life you don’t want to cut it very fine or even miss it for the sake of fog.

I wonder what services would now be operating from Filton’s 8094ft 09/27 had that airfield and not Lulsgate been developed as a commercial airport?

I’m really pleased to see BRS expanding! This is a big step for Bristol Intl Airport and they have been tyring to get these flights for years now. BRS is my local and I live in Yatton which is right under the flightpath for runway 09 and all the locals and press are complaining like mad but I’m pleased! I’ll have CO a/c from America flying over my house. Amazing! The runway is very short at BRS! the biggest a/c I’ve seen is a AMM 763, BY 762, MON A300-600.

I never said it wasnt, im just asking DanAir when a hot day has caused LBA problems lately? Not since of the days of the overheating brakes on the 738s (Now sorted), has it.
Surely when LBAs runway is extended, the same route from LBA would be viable with cities like Leeds and Bradford nearby? I admit though, alot of work would have to be done to the airport (Access and Security Facilities for two things).
Not wishing to take the thread away from the news though – Great news for all involved at BRS airport.

Well, Tom, it is the highest international airport in the country, after all.
I’m surprised that airliners operating out of there don’t need RATO packs. 😀

Since when did the high runway at LBA cause problems at LBA on a hot day?
Not even the 738s have problems now on hot days.
The new check in area at LBA is fab, and apparantly all charter airlines are going to start using it very shortly which is great news.
I have had loads of cheap holidays and flights from LBA (2 weeks in Corfu last August with names accom – £300 each, £19 LBA-DUB-LBA £21 LBA-BFS-LBA), though I do agree, some of the supplements sometimes are too high.

Yes the runway at LBA is high, so that does cause problems particularly on a rare warm day. Also LBA is often adversely affected by bad weather, fog and such like.
The terminal needs expansion, the check in area is a nightmare, especially whern a couple of charters depart at the same time, such as Saturday mornings. A complete nightmare!
Tour operators have always tried as hard as they can to persuade people not to fly from LBA. They have whacked on some pretty outrageous flight supps in the past, making holidaying from the Yorks airport an expensive business for local people.

Happy to oblige, Joe.
According to the Aerad, 09/27 at Bristol is 2011m/6598ft in length, while 14/32 at Leeds is 7382ft long.
Don’t forget the altitude difference, though. LBA is 61ft higher above sea level than BRS. 😀

Similer with BHX’s runway which i think is 8,657ft, the CO 752 lifts off at roughly the same time as at EDI
By: Bmused55 - 7th September 2004 at 13:12
Those figures are indeed correct LBA, they are going to have some payload penalties I think.
Should be ok at Bristol.
EDI’s runway is 8,479 feet. The CO 757 lifts of there with an average 90% pax load easily before its hit 7,500 to 8,000 in my estimation. Even so, I am quite sure its a derated take off. So add a bit more power and it should be fine.
However, to be safer, perhaps reducing the seating a little or not sell so many spots per flight might help.

Suprise, suprise. Where next for Continental Teeside, Norwich, Blackpool? They may find this route tough going. Take it they are using the 757 again!
Good news for West Country pax. 😀
Can anyone confirm that Bristol’s runway is 6,500 feet?
Surely at that length even a 752 would be weight restricted..?

Bristols is 6598 feet, according to the website Ive found, LBAs is 7381 feet! That cant be right surely…
Yes, BRS has a short runway

Britol-Newark with Continental confirmed from May 20th next year, according to BBC online.

We support the development of additional termial capacity and a 300m runway extension at Leeds Bradford International Airport, provided every effort is made to minimise aircraft noise.
Thats what is says on the department of Transports website.

Well thats good news then……….wonder how long it would be extended to whats BRS 6500ft….? somthin like that, maybe your looking at 8000ft or less? i dunno 🙂
By: LBARULES - 7th September 2004 at 11:10
Well we have had 747s here in the past, but the last time one came it damaged the runway!
We have a Britannia 762 based here for the 1st part of the summer, and we have some BY 763 flights to Bridgetown in Feb, with an intermediate stop on the way I think. I cant remember off the top of my head how long the runway is, but it is a little bit shorter than BRS I think, the runway extension should be happening within the next couple of years, as it is already been marked out.
By: Future Pilot - 7th September 2004 at 11:07
lol Tom, how long is the runway ay LBA, whats the biggest aircraft the runway and apron/gate’s can handle?
