Recently got the new F-102 Delta Dagger in action book. Obviously the “in action” series aren’t the most comprehensive books on the market, but they are relatively inexpensive, and always have some cool pictures to look at.
Being an F-102 fan (my favorite Century Jet), I read the book with great delight.
I got to wondering though, and I thought of some questions about the F-102’s weapons that hopefully I can get answers too.
I’m going to post what I think, and then I need someone to correct what I say if necessary.
The Falcon came in eight versions not counting the two AIM-26 variants. The F-102 could carry up to six Falcons in its three bays.
The Falcon came in the following versions:
AIM-4 – SARH model
AIM-4A – definitive SARH model
AIM-4B – first IR model
AIM-4C – improved IR model
AIM-4E – first Super Falcon model with SARH seeker
AIM-4F – improved AIM-4E
AIM-4G – IR Super Falcon model
AIM-4D – last AIM-4 version with IR seeker of AIM-4G and intended for fighter combat
AIM-26A – nuclear tipped (warhead type and yield anyone?) SARH version
AIM-26B – conventional version with SARH guidance
The F-102 could carry up to six AIM-4/AIM-4A/AIM-4B/AIM-4C/AIM-4D variants and the AIM-26A/B could be carried in the center bay only for a maximum of two. If AIM-26 was carrier, the inboard 12 70-mm rockets were deleted.
That’s all of what I think I know…….anyone have corrections at this point?
Additionally I think the F-102 could carry the AIM-4E and G, but I’m not sure. Was the AIM-4E/F/G series ever operational on the F-102? I know the F-106 carried all three types (and if I’m not mistaken those were the only Falcon versions the Six carried).
Help is greatly appreciated.
