Conversion to type.

Stage one of my conversion to type – Reminding myself how to land a taildragger – took place yesterday.

My first ever flight in a Cub, this one, a Super Cub, climbs like a winged angel and lands beautifully despite my best efforts.

I was going to ask if it has reminded you that feet are for other things than walking on but I guess that you never forgot having been flying a PA-22 for so long.

Nice one Mark. Added bonus – smoke mod 🙂

Either that or all three have blown rings 😀

I’ve just gone and done it too.
This one (in the middle) will shortly be filling my hangar space.
Fun times ahead.

Are you using pitch for attitude and power for speed?

Never say never though Moggy. That dream aircraft may just come into your grasp one day.

Glad you have found yourself a great little aircraft. If she gives you 10 years worth of pleasure then you will be laughing.

I’m fairly confident in saying that I shall keep this for the next ten years or so then retire gracefully. It will almost certainly be my last owned aircraft.

Its ability to get myself and Mrs Moggy from Norfolk to (say) Le Touquet in under the hour, whilst using half the fuel it would have taken me in the PA22 is its strength. The proximity of its fast cruise and VNE is just something I’ll have to learn to handle. It shouldn’t be a long-term issue, but coming from a very draggy, to a very slippery airframe is always going to raise that issue.

So is that a good or a bad thing when it comes to your particular kind of flying.

Ie does this fit in with your needs or are you just going to put up with for a while before moving on to pastures new?

Astonishingly agile. 🙂

A cruise descent from 4,500 where I had been playing around some cumulus saw 205mph on the ASI – far too close to VNE for comfort. You have to watch it like a hawk.

So how does your new baby feel to fly then Moggy. Compared to say the Cub or the Colt.

Pretty slick I would imagine.

First ‘solo’ yesterday. It’s almost like being a PPL again

But I bet the grin factor is just as great. Hope you are enjoying it.

Moggy

Congrats on finally flying in a Cub, although with many flights in them over the years, personal preference is for the J3/L-4 version. Very fine and economical aeroplanes all of them.

Doing things somewhat the other way around to you, having previously sampled the RV-6 & 8, last weekend I flew in an RV-4 for the first time, back home from a private strip fly-in.

Hope you have lots of enjoyment with yours. Tailwheel aircraft are best, although I do miss prop swinging.

Stage two today – cockpit familiarisation and taxiing up and down the strip at Andrewsfield.

Stage three tomorrow when I’m sure insurance is in place … er… flying.
