‘Transits for locating the wreckage are illustrated in the source, along with a sketch of the structure. (NB the sketch illustrates a 4 engine flying boat. If the sketch is correct, then this cannot be a Catalina, which is a 2 engine type).’

coranados and little Cumbrae

I have a press report in which it states the Coronados were moored off of Fairhaven Largs through the winter of 1945-1946 efforts were made to see if the US wanted them back under the terms of “lend lease” but this was not successful and they were towed out next to the isle of Little Cumbrae and scuttled on the 28th of March 1946.

Form 78 for the four aircraft confirms scuttling after prolonged storage at Loch Ryan.

JX501 JX498 JX494 JX486

Date of SOC given in 78s as 28/03/46 and on strength of No.45 Group.

Can anyone provide confirmation/proof that these were scuttled off Little Cumbrae?

More recent publications (e.g. Butler’s Air Arsenal North America) state that these were scuttled off Bermuda in 1946. The last Largs flight was in 1944, and 231 had moved to Bermuda by the end of the War.

There were Catalinas scuttled in the Clyde, and I wonder if it’s a case of 2+2=5?

Having briefly searched (not being familiar with the type myself!), the aircraft was the Consolidated PB2Y-3.

Wings Across the Border Vol 3 recently published has four photos of Coronados at Beaumaris, also Mariners, Catalinas and other marine types. Apart from a full history of Saro at Beaumaris, there is much else of interest in this gem of a book

Does anyone have, or know of, a picture of a Coronado in British service?

Thanks,

Steve

There is a picture in Thetford’s Aircraft of the Royal Air Force Since 1918, published by Putnam. Probably others elsewhere but that was the only one I could locate at the moment.

Hi Rod,

In the Clyde off Largs/Ailsa as sonar targets.

Had been under care and maintenance at Loch Ryan since the squadron stopped using them.

As lend/lease items they needed to be either returned, paid for or destroyed at the end of the war.

Ross
