Hi all, first time user of this forum, so be gentle. :p

Can anyone tell me what I can expect at Cosford? I am heading there in a couple of weeks time.

Thanks in advance.

A Friday evening plug for one of my favourite birds, now nesting at Cosford …

BDP / Vic, check if there’s still a funny placard in the tail turret — it was there last time I visited, but that was a few years ago. Have fun, and take another photo of this bird for me if you can!

Hi Pembroke,

Not only does the Victor look good, but it sound good, too! I haven’t seen the Vulcan fly, but looking at static photos & being built by the Johnson’s it’s gotta be good, too:)

Hello everyone.

I was at Cosford on Monday, and the TSR2, Fairey FD2, and Prototype Meteor were all outside. They were being moved around so I wonder if this is connected with the earlier comment about the airshow at Fairford.

They looked great in the sun though 🙂

The small scale Victor in the photo looks just like the real thing, it’s fantastic.

Hi Damien,

Wrong wording, I should’ve said, on that day. Great pictures though. The Vulcan looks fantastic!

Out of curiosity, I’ve just asked Cosford about the restoration centre. The answer is : pre-booked tours on Friday afternoons only, give them advance notice of proposed dates.

Mark V.

You are right of course, Cosford is a branch of the RAF Museum. I focussed on the airliners for the simple reason that BDP is primarily a user of the Airliner World Forum and as such I thought that might be where his interest predominantly lay.

Contact the museum on www.rafmuseum.org.uk
Ask about the tour of the new restoration centre, I think is goes ahead around 2.00pm each day, I’ve not been to Cosford since this opened so can not say what it is like.

Totally agree with Kev – Cosford is a magnificent collection, in my view the highlight being the Research & Development collection which ranges from a Meteor prototype, through TSR2, to FBW Jaguar.
Two warnings though. Several aircraft (Meteor & SR53 included) are listed as being in the static park at RIAT, so may not be present. Also some exhibits (Me262 & others) are being transferred to Hendon as part of the Milestones of Flight reshuffle. I should check in advance if there is anything you particularly want to see.

Minor point – Cosford is actually the Northern (ish) branch of the RAF Museum and is well worth a visit, the airliners, worthy though they are, would be last on my list. Great collection of WWII aircraft, unsurpassed missile collection and the magnificent Avro Lincoln too.

Hi All,

The LMA ‘do’ at Cosford is 12-13th July. Although flying is on the Sunday, only. It should be a very good day (pity it clashes with ‘Legends’). It’ll be the only place you’ll see a Vulcan & a Victor fly, this year & I think there’s a BAe Typhoon (model) to finish the day off. There will also be a Bomber fly past, or so I’ve been told. Should be an excellent day.

Cheers,
Neilly

Hi Vic.

Cosford is well worth the visit, or indeed many visits. I’ve been 6 times so far this year, but I live just 20 minutes away. As Andy said it houses the British Airways Museum collection which includes a BAC 1-11 500 series, a Boeing 707, a Bristol Britannia, a Trident, a Viscount, a VC10 and a Comet. There is a small display of uniforms and models.

The rest of the museum is an eclectic mix of aeroplanes and memorabilia which is totally engrossing. For me some of the highlights are the TSR2, the ‘prone’ Meteor, the Catalina, Hastings, York, Dakota, Me 410, Ju52, Shorts Belfast, the B-24. The experimental aircraft section is amazing with all kinds of record breaking aircraft. There are also a Vulcan, Victor, Varsity, Argosy, Mosquito, Andover and Neptune. There is a collection of missiles ranging from the V2 of WW2 to the Blue Steel Stand-off missile and some of the more modern tv guided weaponry.

To do the place justice you will need to spend the biggest part of the day there. There are more airframes than those I have listed.

I posted a thread with pictures on AW but can’t remember what it was called. I also posted one on flypast which should come to light if you search for ‘Unusual angle.’

Hope this helps,

Im sure he will tell more about it than I can.
