Cosford Do-17 thread

Hello all!

Sorry about absencs, much has happened.

Quick history:
A month ago finally did the planned trip to Germany, Czech Rep, and UK, family reunion and Do-17 researching.

A week ago (18th) I arrived in Cosford to see the Do-17.
MUCH to my surprise most of the 17 was out of the tents and being being more directly cleaned!!
It was also a fabulous sunny day (a miracle, I know), and a lot of details revealed themselves. It was brilliant!

I took hundreds if not a thousand photos of it, will post a few up once I have some time to unpack and clean up (just got back 36 hours ago).

More to come.

Some news at last. It’s going to go on permanent display at Cosford:

Maybe the ‘new’ ‘curator’ or ceo or whatever her post is has decided to throw it away with the rest of BoB heritage?

During the Conservation Centre open week last November I noticed various unidentifiable and unlabled pieces of the Dornier lying all over the place. I got the impression that we will never see much of this aircarft assembled in an aircraft shaped display. Its only a month until we will be able to see it again for ourselves (unless the skip has been and gone).

I really do hope that the conservation team have`nt given up on the Do17Z remains. I have been looking forward so much to seeing the remains reconstructed and possibly displayed the right way up. I do find it hard to believe that no werke number plate has come to light at all. Having spoken recently to Dave Brocklehurst i was amazed that his offer to show the team where to look for the number was turned down flatly.

TonyT,
Did not notice that little blurb at the top of page, most of which has not changed in years (and one link is non-functional).
App is also broken on iOS.
Knowing UK, would need a special room to dry off (should move it to Texas, plenty dry here, that is when hurricanes not coming. The storm, not airplane! )

RRW,
Very true.
Its present condition does not leave much to see. It will be a bigger challenge to present than if it where intact, or even just 1 large section.

And should have posted here, only found this thread later.

Yes FP, exactly what I meant.

I suspect that the major issue is that whilst the wreckage is interesting to most users of this forum, it needs to be displayed with a wider audience in mind. That the wreckage has been stabilised and is being conserved is the most important aspect.

Thanks for posts.

Disappointing to see loss of interest for what is last of its kind (even if not much left)
Granted there are more pressing matters, but this certainly deserves a strong and steady effort.

Red, guess U mean this?

I expect it will be visible on the open day shown on the page linked above. It was last year, and there are few better ways of spending a couple of hours.

I visited Cosford 4 weeks ago, and asked one of the guides where could I see the Do17, his reply was not very encouraging, when I said I had seen it in the poly tunnel a couple of years ago, he replied ‘ good job you did then as there is not much of it to see now!’ Slightly worrying I thought.

‘ello all,

Been a long time since last post, cant believe time go so fast.
I assume by now rest of 17 is out, tents and Cosford outdoor display are gone.
And so has a lot of the excitement it seems, do not see much in way of updates. 🙁

Anyone see it recently?

Or perhaps there is just a big space entitled “Sgt Copping’s P40 Diorama” that they have decided they need to fill.

I guess all that sand will come in useful anyway.

This is interesting. So does this mean along with the technical drawings I recall that have been provided by (EADS?) to the Rafm, and these extra parts, is a complete rebuild being considered?

I’ve been following the Do17 recovery + conservation with great interest and agreed with the decision not to restore it. However, this article seems to suggest they are looking to replace missing parts beyond perhaps marking out the positions of the missing canopies. Perhaps their ambitions are increasing as time goes by?

Do17 wreckage from France:

“The wreckage is now being transported to the RAF Museum’s conservation facility at Cosford, where the Goodwins Dornier is being conserved. Many of the parts recovered from the beach at Berck are missing from the Goodwins Dornier, so they will contribute to what will eventually be a very impressive and important exhibition on the aircraft”

Just a question.

I hadn’t seen this article posted on here before:
