Cold War Museum

It does look rather crowded, granted. the digital camera i took with me really doesn’t give the building justice, not only are there all three V bombers in there basically on the floor, but at the other end, there is a york, hastings and a belfast!!! its a colossal building. cleverly the victor and valiant are jacked up about three feet to enable you to walk under the wings etc, which enables more people to walk around. i think the way its done is rather clever, the v bombers are not lit massively by natural light, which magnifies their brooding presence hugely, also i think that the darkness is to give some feel for what they were designed to do, drop nuclear weapons, a horrific purpose. however at the other end where the aircraft from the berlin airlift are (the york and hastings, dont know if the belfast was involved) are light by natural light, from the window at the far left of the hangar, see the posted photos above, which gives them a much happier feel, they weren’t designed to carry nuclear weapons! all in all the whole thing is an experience that is unique, my grandfather and i arrived at 11:30 and didnt leave until about four o’clock, not once did he or i look at our watches, just became totally absorbed in memories (for him) and sheer awe (for both of us) im going again when i get back from uni in december

Love the pics and been meaning to go Cosford myself and see the new exhibition hall. Looks very crowded ? And shame there isnt more glass walling to let more natural light in ? but i cant realy judge untill i go see it in the flesh 🙂

Nice photos Nashio. Did you take one of the Britannia undergoing her repaint outside? Just wondered how far they’ve got.

Now is was looking for an excuse to get down to Cosford 😉

Jet Bomber Pilot

and last couple of the valiant which stunned me, an awesome sight, to see the three V bombers together, the only place in the world you can do so. the cold war museum is itself a piece of art, as much as the art it contains! the circle of death, shows the devastation a one Megaton thermonuclear weapon produces, the orange circle dead over cosford, “heat of the sun” gradually getting less and down to skin blisters at wolverhampton! 😮 the russians have a 100 Megaton bomb, that causes third degree burns at 100km 😮 its slightly chilling knowing that most of the aircraft were designed for one purpose in mind!

Hi
You should read Jet Bomber Pilot by Wg Cdr ‘Robby’ Robinson. The pressure on those crews were enormous. They were the men who on the word of a politician could have brought about the final ‘global warming!’
Cheers

blast, i meant to take one of her, as far as i can see she looks to be right in the middle of it, scaffolding everywhere, minus her spinners, seems to have a fresh white coat of paint from the cockpit glazing down but i couldt tell what was what really, sorry

Its amazing what a few quid can do for one’s museum….

Its an awesome place. Did you press the big red button that says ‘do not press’ on the interactive screens?

THe more photos I saw on here of Cosford the more I want to go. I sat here lastnight when I got in, saw ya pics and I thought Ben wouldnt take a pic of TSR2 without him being in one. That would be like me not takin photos of me & a Cranberry LoL

The Ground burst pic you took puts a 1 Megaton blast into perspective thats for sure.

yeah, definitely, my grandfather is not really an aviation enthusiast, but he lived near warton at the time many of the aircraft were testing. i think he knew jimmy dell and don knight 😀 but for him to see again all of these magnificent aircraft, was spellbinding, he walked around them all, almost in a dream. the day was worth it just for that 😀

Good day out, isn’t it? Took my son and his girlfriend earlier this year – they’re both 16, greener-than-thou and pacifists to their fingertips, yet they were both absolutetly fascinated by what they saw with an intelligent appreciation of what it is all about and what it meant in an earlier era.

cracking day, though i have to say, the surrounding areas to the main entrance hall, now feel empty and desolate without the airliners, and all of the aircraft that were once outside. brilliant that they all have permanent accommodation though 😀

some more 😀 😀 😀 just a quick footnote though, why is the short SB5 the only aircraft with a “fit for historical preservation” notice the type 188 was going to be destroyed in much the same manner as XR219:rolleyes:
