Could there be four Lancasters flying in a few years?

I have never known a museum so clued up. They really know what they are doing funds wise.

If people are bored (and have money to spare) now that the Vulcan isn’t flying, they could always help the NX611 restoration.

I personally hope NX611 doesn’t ever fly, I’ve been to East Kirkby several times so I’m not postulating from just my PC, but I always come away feeling that really there is not enough taxiable aircraft in the preservation scene and what you get is an original aircraft that comes alive that you can get near to. We have either museum pieces or virtual replicas in the sky [ not decrying either of these ] but we could in reality have some quite rare aircraft come alive without the endless paper trail [ I guess?] to enable this to happen.

Simple fact is the owners want Jane to fly… thats the goal. But its not going to happen soon.

Isn’t KB976 spread across three continents with the good stuff lurking in shipping containers somewhere in Kermit Weeks’ deep storage? I would be heartily surprised if it ever flew again. Isn’t the Weeks material (for want of a better word) a combination of KB976 and another Lanc anyway? I can imagine the thorny issue of what happens to all of Weeks’ unfinished projects will come to the fore in the next couple of decades. As easy as it is to champion somebody stockpiling all of these aircraft, he doesn’t have the time to save them all, and a Limey bomber in thrashed condition isn’t going to be top of the heap.

No, two or three years ago, the FM212 Lancaster was announced to be restored for static condition only. Except if they changed their mind.
So no 5th Lancaster to fly.

Perhaps that answers the question of what will replace the Vulcan. Five Lancs in formation with the Shackleton. :very_drunk: Place your bets now…

I dare say that restoring a Lancaster, that has spent 51 years outdoors, to flight is perhaps the dictionary definition of uphill struggle. The same applies to the example in the WIX thread. Wasn’t that one at imminent risk of ending up in the skip?

It would of course be lovely if ‘Just Jane’ could be RTF, but I’ve always wondered how/where they plan to take off from & operate out of given half the runway at EK has been dug up!

I always find the NX611 situation a little odd…are they going to push the button and do it, or aren’t they? But good luck to the Canadians, anyway.

And I have yet to read any authoritative forecast for Jane’s return to flight.
