The Inland Revenues’ winding up petition against the airport operator is being heard tomorrow. There is some hope that this is only a temporary situation, but the CAA evidently refused to allow any flying operations today.

The Shorts 360 your referring to comes into Coventry every night along with a second aircraft from Germany around 30 minutes later. Both these aircraft bring in Cargo for Junghienrich, Siemens, Briggs and also frieght for Lynx which is then driven to the delivery company I drive for DXBusiness Direct. It had a massive effect at our firm as both flights have now been permenantly rerouted to Birmingham International.
I hope that the permanantly part of the plan doesn’t mean they know something we don’t 🙁
Thanks for the info! I always wondered what D-CRAS was carrying every night. 😀 Its a shame that its been permenantly rerouted to BHX instead. I hope that Coventry does re-open.

Here’s my little story about Coventry Airport: back in the early 1990’s I sat the CAA ATPL exams and passed all the theory. So I had to find a flying school to do the practical. I was staying in Tamworth at the time with a friend who is now captain for BA on B777s. Without any “flight” planning whatsoever, I hopped on a bus to Birmingham, then on another bus to Coventry, then a third bus in the direction of the airport. The bus route, however, did not go all the way to airport. It missed the airport by a mile or two. I asked the driver how to get to the airport, expecting a good couple of mile walk in the cold and rain. The driver said “no problem” since the end of the route was nearby, he finished the route and then dropped me off at the airport. Something you don’t see every day of your life and my faith in humanity took a quantum leap! 😀

Also I think theres some nightly cargo flights by a shorts 360 D-CRAS.

Regarding the DC-6s: both G-SIXC and G-APSA are now grounded at Coventry due to maintenance I believe? :confused:

I think you’ll find Atlantic – the freighting company – will have dispersed their aircraft to continue commercial operations
Atlantique, the classic side, have less pressing needs.

regarding air atlantique. some are still at coventry… most were flown to Birmingham, where they will operate out of now, they are parked on the remote stands of T1 rather than the Elmdon apron. also a DC-3 was flown to wellsbourne.

Thats good news. Although fingers crossed for AAs future and that this won’t have too much of an adverse affect.

My flying school often send IR students on ILS approaches to coventry.
I’ve only flown from Coventry once, on G-AMPY.

I presume the CAA has forced the airport to cease operations as the airport company has closed down – no staff (particularly fire, etc) means no licence, and I can’t EGBE operating unlicenced

It was getting heavily discussed when I was down there last Thursday. There were a couple of ideas floating about about the future of the airport, but nothing definite. It’s going to make life awful for those employed there at the worst time of year.
