Coventry Airshow photos (Saturday)

Great day out until just before the end. The weather was a bit of a pain- kept clouding over just at the wrong moment! Did anyone else notice that there seemed to be more people with press passes than spectators?

Mark Linney is going to get his hands on the F-86 again just as soon as Cliff stops hogging it.
Rolf and Rod are down as pilots of both aircraft. The same goes for them as for Mark, when Cliff is not hogging it. It’s apparently quite difficult for him to prize his fingers from around the stick.

Lee has been flying fighters with both OFMC and TFC for many years now (8 or 9 at least).

Yes, the commentator got all the Breitling Fighter pilots wrong.

Ray flew the Spitfire, Nigel Lamb flew the Mustang, and it was Lee Proudfoot in the Corsair.

If I remember rightly, Ray is a youthful 75 – but don’t quote me 🙂

I assumed Ray Hanna was flying MH434 but I’m sure I heard the commentator say it was Nigel Lamb.
Who was it really?

Agewise, there was a brief interview with Ray in the mag we’re not allowed to mention a few months ago. Said his first flight was in 1948 in RNZAF. 73/74 sounds about right.

No sign of you on any of the originals I’m afraid Damien, the only thing I’ve cropped out of the above image is a white Land Rover bonnet on the extreme left.

Know what you mean about just getting the smoke trails Everton, its one of those cases where if you see it in the viewfinder you know you’ve missed it!

Cheers Steve & Alexis. Good to see Mark Linney flying the T33 (and presumably the F86) again. Does anyone know whether Rod Dean and Rolf Meum still fly them?

As Damien wrote, fantastic picture Gareth
Hope mine are half as good as, though I think I’ll probably just have smoke trails of where the Extra had been 😀

Canberra was flown by Dave Piper.
Sea Vixen was Brian Grants responsability.
Meteor was Dan Griffiths.
Vampire was Paul Morris even though the commentator called him Dave.
Hunter was John Hurrell.

What happened to the Strikemaster that was supposed to be there?

And i think a Gnat would have been appropriate.

Hi,

Don’t know about the Canberra, but it was Cliff Spink in the Sabre and Mark Linney in the T-33

Good god! Damn near spat my coffee out reading that!

I hadn’t thought about that at all, but I suppose he must be. Let’s see, Mark was 40 when he passed away, would have been 44 this year. Father and son about thirty years apart… yeah, that tallies up.

Blimey, Ray does extremely well for an oldie. If I’m still able to say my own name at 73 I’ll consider that a triumph! 😀

Stevieb, great shot of that Breitling formation. It always amazes me how tight they manage to keep it, despite flying four (three in this case) very disimilar types. The sign of some very switched on aviators…

Some excellent photos of some real classic a/c there! As more of a commercial fan i think the Electras in particular look fantastic, and the Sea Vix in her Red Bull c/s certainly looks better flying in that c/s than she may have “sat on the ground” in a Mil one, if you get my drift…

Can’t wait to see some of them either at Elvington or Southport later this year – coming to think about i hows about Sunderland too! Will have to get the diary out for some serious time planning!
