Coventry This Sunday

Good Afternoon,

I was wondering whether there was likely to be anything interesting going on (aviation wise) in the Coventry area this Sunday.
It appears I have to come up to Coventry to visit Mrs Yak11Fan’s sister who is apparently another year older and was just wondering whether I would be likely to find anything of interest if I could escape for a little while.
Any nice pubs near the airport which we could visit for lunch perhaps????
What do you think my chances are of this plan coming off????

Some of us have only seen the inside of Hangars 6 and 7 🙂 I think the MRC crew will be on holiday for a couple of weeks – in my case SWMBO has already got me tearing the house apart – a whole winters worth of home improvements!!!

Nice sketch Will – ever thought of doing it as a career? 😀

It’s because he put the < > round it – the browser thinks it’s HTML…

Sorry ‘lectra, it is hiding behind the Antanov-thingy 🙂

(Is it just me that cannot see ‘lectra’s post on screen, I have to quote it and read it copied on the top of my reply  )

Sounds like the right one, all painted timbers and ‘tasteful’ extensions….

PS, Their sausage and mash is well worth a try, despite being by far and away the cheapest thing on the menu, it’s a bit good!

Nice pic Will. Is the Mill the tudor-style inn? I know I stayed at one meeting that description, some time ago, but could not remember the name. If so, it is most agreeable.

Hello Y11F, for a spot of lunch I can reccomend either the air museum, or if you want more of a restaurant/pub type of thing then your best bet is the Mill down the road past the Roman fort (Very nice proper food that often seems genuinely as ‘home made’ as the sign outside suggests, washed down with an Adnams if the fancy takes you… 🙂 ) You can also sit outside by the river which is all rather agreeable….

The scribbled map (with cartographical standards befitting somebody just back from the pub) shows the layout of local attractions!

I’m not sure of any significant aviation related stuff going on, unfortunatley I’m not around on Sunday (back home in Kidderminster for my Birthday) otherwise I could have arranged a quick hangar visit, the Mustang restoration company is not meeting there this weekend, although there is some Dakota painting activity next week…..

I’m the one with the flashing wings and the hairy shoulder blades.
I must get my head screwed on the right way.

Y11F: All the fun at Coventry was last week (See General Aviation). These two rogues were spotted outside The Oak.

You can walk to it in a minute from the General Aviation end. However, the museum is a bus ride away. The bus stops outside the GA building (the southerly end – See Pooleys).

You cannot walk around live side at Coventry. You may be able to taxi to the grass apron by the Air Park, near the tower, so it is a shorter walk to the museum, which is on the north side.

Refuelling is self-service and if you need to find someone to talk you through it, it may take up to 30 minutes and three calls for them to arrive (my experience last week). Better still phone me and I’ll talk you through it!

Also, my radio was unreadable there, which is a problem I have not had elsewhere. There was a ruddy great big DC3 between me and the tower, which I moved out of the way so as to be heard (OK, it was really me that moved).

Visiting Coventry

The Midland Air Museum do moderate snacks (bacon sandwiches, etc.) and beverages/cans but not meals as such.

There are two pubs in Baginton and both do meals:

The Oak is right next to the old airport entrance/car park and is oriented towards the family with swings, etc. outside and an indoor (pay for) play area. However the building has history – it was requisitioned during WW2 and used as the Officer’s Mess by the various squadrons that flew from Baginton. There are a number of pictures, etc. on the walls of some aeroplanes – both RAF and Armstrong Whitworth (the AWA factory was on the opposite side of the airfield). Also if the weather is good you can sit outside and look at the tails of some of Air Atlantique’s fleet and watch take-offs/landings.

Note: best spotting spot is to continue out of the village (with the airfield on your left) and, just past the end of the runway, turn left into Rock Farm Lane where people congregate to view.

The other pub in Baginton is The Old Mill down Mill Hill, past The Lunt reconstructed Roman fort. The Old Mill is a little more up market pub/hotel/restaurant and used to have a water mill. I drank many a pint in here in my younger days.

Have an enjoyable day (dont forget the Midland Air Museum).

Roger Smith.

Admirable forward planning. Always good to get some aviation into obligations like visiting the inlaws. My missuses parents are 10mins from Hardwick, so there’s often nice things to see and hear when out in the garden!
