Does anyone know if any video footage exists of an amazing flypast which took place at RAFC Cranwell in 1987?
It was the occasion of the OTC passing-out parade with the successful tainees lined-up at attention as proud mums and dads and friends looked on.
Along come two Phantoms from nearby RAF Coningsby, ostensibly to carry out a sedate fly-by to mark the event…that was the plan.
The mighty Phantoms roared in so low they were, as General Turgidson might have put it, “frying chickens in a barnyard.” That’s right folks they were even on afterburners and reportedly so low they were beneath the famous clock tower.
Hats were blown off, chairs knocked over, women screaming, dust and debris swirling hither and yon. Pandemonium.
I know this event took place as I have newspaper cuttings reporting the event. However, the world will never spin exactly right until I’ve feasted my eyes on that VIDEO FOOTAGE.

On a Pprune thread, it says that it was estimated to have dropped to 74 feet before climbing away….

97 IOT Flypast
Apparently there is another video from a Cranwell graduation flypast where an F-4 is much lower.
It’s the same flypast, it just shows the F4 from a different angle (Notice at 1.34 approx it is CLIMBING as it appears from behind the building)

SAFETY CATCH 2, possibly?
III. “Minimum Separation Distance”. Wing Commander A J Thorpe CFSO discusses this safety issue (the minimum distance separating a low flying jet aircraft from the terrain below).

Crazy Cranwell
That would be grand BUT in the meantime I may ask the question from some old Phantom jocks to see if they have any leads on photo’s/video footage….
I have two cuttings, both from the Grimsby Evening Telegraph. You’ll have to give me a few days or more due to this lovely weather, but I’ll will try to get the cuttings and attach ’em.

NOT the video footage everyone is looking for ,but note the F-4 flylowpast at about 49sec. Awesome. Turn the volume off for the very bad music track.
Great video of a low-down Phantom, stangman. Gives us an idea of what THE video might be like. Are we getting closer, I think perhaps we are.
Oh dear, Forum readers, let us keep the faith. Let me quote from the Black Widows Bike Gang (sort of) “Lord, you have given me these crosses to bear, and I will carry them all the way from Jerusalem to Grimsby, whichever’s closer. But hear me Lord, thou I walk through the Valley Of the Shadow of Death, I will watch that video FOR MY LAST SUPPER.”

I remember reading about this in the Daily Telegraph at the time. I don’t think the pilot/s came out of it too well.

What is commonly refered to as a “career limiting decision”?

‘Very few people would be strong enough to raise one of those early Tape Video Cameras skywards…’
Quite the opposite. Even professional handheld video cameras were ‘lightweight’ at this point. Don’t forget, they wouldn’t nessacerily (sp?) record in the camera either, they would be connected via cables back to the OB truck to record there. In one of my car rallying videos I have footage of the BBC filming the RAC Rally in 1986, and it’s WOMAN who is filming the proceedings, so the cameras certainly weren’t large at all.
Amateur formats at that point were video-8, Hi8 (I think), plus of course full-size VHS and VHS-‘C’, so all easy-peasy!

Yes, but it 1987 not ’97. Great stuff on this site and, tantalyzingly, someone hinting that he might have a copy…or is he just toying with us???
The ’97’ in the title of the PPRUNE thread refers to the number of the IOT course that was passing out. In this case, No. 97 Initial Officer’s Training Course. It does not refer to the year.
I remember this flypast as I was driving past the College, en route to Innsworth, when the formation first flew overhead on the authorised pass. I heard the noise from the other passes but did not see them. Wish I had.

Well, if this is true I’d love to hear more!
Could you scan and attach those cuttings on here, should make for good reading…

Auditioning for a remake of High Flight?
Perhaps “Low Flight” would be more appropriate?
