Crash of Anson VP-KHT East Africa 1951

I am trying to find out more about Anson VP-KHT and its crash in July 1951 in Tanzania. I have found the ASN report at http://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/wiki.php?id=27662 but wonder if anyone has anything more about the aircraft and its accident. Thanks

The film could well have been one called ‘The Rival World’ (produced by The Shell film unit)
Yup, I remember the Shell emblem at the end ( Also the typical “RP” 1950’s Male British documentary commentary !)

Wow, Flyer, if it is there you will track it down………..!!!

Well done, what a find !! Yes, as you say I have found the aircraft and flying shots wonderful, really evocative of “bush flying”. There were even some Austers in the background of a couple of shots.

Thanks for you efforts so we can share this unique footage……

Really would like to see this film come to light. If it involves a Rapide crop spraying in East Africa, it is almost certainly VP-KHF flown by Ted Fresson who, of course, had founded Highland Airways before the War…… The a/c crashed at Garissa in January 1955 with the loss of one life.

The film could well have been one called ‘The Rival World’ (produced by The Shell film unit), I cannot see it online anyway though.

Do not panic, men !
I have found this film. Besides the English “The Rival World” title it have the Dutch title “Strijd zonder einde” or Spanish title “La lucha sin fin” (both titles could be translated as “Endless struggle”); and, possibly, many other titles in other languages.

This is excellent colour film by Bert Haanstra, made in 1955.

There are nice views of DH Rapide (the registration is unseen though) on the ground and in the flight during the spraying operation.
Also we can see excellent shots of red-white Anson VP-KHS during the take-off, flight, spraying; one DC-3 of East African Airways; and, finally, the flight of dark blue-white Anson VP-KJK !
See the thumbnails of film frames below.

This film gives unique possibility to see early Kenyan aircraft in use and at work – and see them IN COLOUR !

I feel sure, this find will be very good gift to Mr Mike [Planemike] – well-known expert in whole early Kenyan aviation area; and to all fans of World’s small aviations.

Here is the link to this unique film. The narrator says in Dutch:

I think the film was made earlier than the 70’s (if it was the one I saw on TV in the early 60’s). It showed locals hopelessly beating at the locusts with branches and the Rapide doing the aerial spraying. What was literally “striking” was the racket of locusts splattering on the windshield as the Rapide ( or possibly the Anson) approached the swarm then, with the wipers going full tilt, the dramatic loss of visibility.

That sounds like the same film, it may well have been made earlier than the 70s but that would be when I saw it.

I remember clearly a schools programme on TV back in the 1970s about aerial spraying of locusts in (East?) Africa which showed an Anson and a DH 89 in use, wonder if that programme still exists?

Martin, hallo. What is the best way to get these photos to you or make them accessible via the Forum.

I’m new here and am not sure of protocols and etiquette!!

I’ll be off air in a minute and will catch up in the morning.

All the best,

Uncle Al.

Hallo Planemike. Just joined the Forum. I have 6 photos of VP-KJK in the middle 1950’s flying out of a field at Kingolwira near Morogoro, Tanganyika. My father was Prison Superintendent at a Farm Prison there and I assume the Anson was spraying the crops on that farm. We lived next to this field and I remember the occasion very well although I was 6 or 7? Please let me know. Not sure how I get the photos to you if required. I have them scanned and ready to go!

Would love to see a photo of KJK too!

Martin

I see that both the Anson and the Auster had no fatalities. So I wonder in what crash did John de Winton Tharp die?

I got more information from his relative who say he was an ATA pilot who was asked to fly “someone of importance”. The weather was bad and he crashed. He died and the passenger survived, So are we looking for a military aircraft?

Do you have anything else about the circumstances?

Sadly, I have not more details, beside those on link below:
