Crashed Lancaster Bomber engine serial numbers mystery

Can anyone throw any light on a mystery relating to engine serial numbers recorded for a Lancaster bomber believed to be of 166 Squadron that crashed at Treuenbrietzen South of Berlin. Lancaster ND401 is recorded as having Merlin 38 engines including ‘P/O 9970/244966’. Am I correct in assuming this is the ‘engine number’ for the port outer engine? In which case would a crankshaft housing that has been recovered definitely carry the same identification number as the engine block it was attached to, or not necessarily so?
Also is there anyway of telling whether an engine was Packard built or not?
A set of questions for the real experts!
