Crowdsourcing a RAF Airmans First Name from his Signature ???? AC2 Smith 624052

Hi

The only unknown (to me) crew member of Vickers Wellington P9225 of 175 Sqn that crashed in Belgium on night of 23/24 March 1940 is AC2 Smith 624052

I have identified all other crew but Smith is a common name.. But I have his signature from his parachute report.. See below

It looks to me like he has 4 initials ? J C J Smith – But anyone care to guess the first? – If I crowd source a likely letter I can start a search in the Air 78 Files (there are over 5000 pages of Smith, so I would like to narrow my search if possible)

Many thanks

Paul you could be right I had thought the A (if A) could be for Aircraftsman but could not see the C “next” the 2 would make sence

It could also be just A2 C J Smith however it gives me another option to look for thanks Paul

To me it looks like Aircraftsman 2nd Class (A2C) J Smith.

It is 149 Squadron on a recce trip to investigate the Mitteland Kanal near Minden, the MI9 reports should give all the details of the crew, I see they caught the boat train service, (must have received help?) landing back in the UK on the 26th March 1940

Hi Paul,

Is 175 Sqn a typo? Out of interest, I looked this up elsewhere and found Wellington P9225 with 149 Sqn. Looking a little lower… the post I was looking at has your name on!

I don’t suppose it matters that much for this enquiry – FWIW, my vote is also A or C, probably A

I agree with ‘A’. That looks like how I was originally taught to write a capital A, as simply a larger lower-case ‘a‘. Alternatively there does seem to be some evidence that the pen slipped on that first initial – might it be another ‘C’? Difficult to make it any other letter…
