Cunningham pub croydon at risk

I am not sure if people here be intrested or not but i want to tell you anyway,On the New Addington housing estate between croydon and Biggin Hill there is a pub named after “Cats eyes” Cunningham,it used to be the Addington Hotel and during the war it was used by many pilots and i heard many stories of pilots going there during Battle of Britain.
Well LIDL shops want to pull it down and build a supermarket there is great resistance locally but i fear it may go through, its a great shame if it does especially as on Purley way another aviation linked pub the Propeller lies burnt out and ready to be pulled down its like history means nothing.

I gather listed building demolition (unless Grade 1) depends on who you know. There’s a Grade 2 listed building, an old manor, about to be demolished in Chesterfield.
Backhanders and devious behaviour would be illegal of course.

Also when going into Croydon today on the 154 bus… when going through Roundshaw, i noticed on the newly built church up there, that the cross on the side is made from an old propeller… any ideas where it has come from or if its just a mock up thing? [/B][/QUOTE]

The props off an Armstrong Whitworth Argosy.

It would be a terrible shame to loose both these buildings. I heard that the propeller pub on purley way is a listed building? Therefore it cannot be torn down.

i agree completely on the fire thing the West Pier saga has left me very unhappy and seeing historic pubs disapear is worse,Cunningham and Propeller are not the only pubs at threat in Croydon but there the two with a world war 2 link, they should be treated better than this,as to the bar i think you are right.

As a Croydon resident of many years I have been apalled by the councils total lack of interest in anything relating to our heritage. All there interested in is another stash of Business rates from Lidl’s. The cunningham will no doubt be bulldozed to make way for another bl**dy supermarket. I’m sure this pub used to have the longest continuous bar in Britain!

I can well remember going to Croydon Airport Society meetings in the Propeller, the pub featured superb Oak panelled walls, this historic building should have been protected.

Regarding the fire, or fires as in the case of Brighton’s West Pier, these seem to happen far too often of late. Very handy for the developers though!

I’m just glad I now live in Tandridge councils area.
