Its crazed….. lots of small cracks all over it. It doesn’t look like impact damage though.

OK, so the soon to be in-laws went to a classic car show at Duxford last weekend and while they were there I asked if they’d mind taking a couple of pictures of the resident Vulcan, XJ824. I’ve not been to Duxford for 3 years or so, so mine are out of date. I thought I’d post them here on Peter’s thread! From looking at these pictures, she seems in good health. As you can see though, she is hemmed in by a whole host of other Aircraft, so is quite hard to photograph on her own!

Door access

The DVD was great mate thanks for that!;) Interesting to hear about your efforts. From you pics though it looked like the door handle had at one time been plated over and half of the plate was missing. I would like to see inside her just to see what she looks like. Also I Wonder what the white stuff is that is visible in her small triangular windows?

Peter, i didn’t see any evidence that her crew door was welded shut, but I may have missed it. IIRC there was a screw of some sort put through the door release handle. I did try to gain access to get some shots of her cockpit, but the handle wouldn’t budge. Also there was a group of Italian aircrew floating about and I suspect that if I’d opened the door, they may well have returned later to remove gizzits from the cockpit. That’s if there is anything left to steal of course. All my attempts to find out who looked after her on the base failed also. So I just took some pictures and let her rest.

maybe they could activate the victor sim special open days at elvington? my dad used to have 3 phase machinery in his workshop and his his bills wernt that high woulnd mind seeing a victor sim with all the lights on, ive never seen an active cockpit just fly bys and dead airframes and taxiable ones (lusty lindy springs to mind)

I’m surprised you haven’t all mentioned XL360 at Midland Air Museum.

This is one of the finest examples of a Vulcan in existance in my opinion. It still has all her engines which are all in great condition and the interior is complete.

Certain bits of equipment are working and I’m sure will soon be full of whistles and hums as further work is done.

She may not be a flying example, but for a museum example, she is a fine one.

Hi all,

It is indeed a victor sim at elvington and it was being brought up to a standard so that for a small charge people could come and “fly” it operationally, and it did fly! Everything was coming on nicely, however, this will probably not happen now as the musuem decided that the power useage was too excesive, (415V 3phase supply, so quite large power bills!) and so have turned it off.

Whether or not it will be restored to work again, i do not know as after it was switched off i transferred to the real victor.

I think there plans are to keep her looking nice for a long as her legs can take it or the airfield wants it off.

Apparently she must also be engineless as the intake covers have small plates mounting them securely to the intakes and the nose blister is definatly riveted over.

The town council of Happy Valley are responsible for the upkeep after the MOD gifted the airframe to the town years ago.

there appears to be a simulator in the restoration shed at elvington (cockpit section) its got wires cables coming out of it and a conventional door handle, looks like it had been painted anti flash white and it looks very much like a victor to me

I believe you’re right Landraver. There is a restoration of some kind underway, but I’m not sure if they intend to get it powered up or just leave it as a static exhibit. Is there anyone that knows any more? Ollie perhaps?

By Phantom I guess they mean the simulater?

I dont know why they dont use the sims any more. I remember the argosy one working a while back – you would think they would be good revenue as well. Unless theres some rule on using the Phantom one – after all what use is a simulater that doesnt work, as an exhibit?
