CWL launch scathing attack on Ryanair + Aer Arann expansion!!

Since Ryanairs incorrect statements about Cardiff Airport and their decision to cease the DUB service, CWL has made this statement, which has a slight air of un-professionalism about it, but I think its great! Also, Aer Arann are taking over the DUB service and according to CWL are announcing a new service to Galway tomorrow! 🙂

CARDIFF- DUBLIN SERVICES
25 April 2006
Cardiff International Airport has become the latest in a string of airports to come under attack from Ryanair – in March it was Ireland’s Cork Airport; earlier in April, Stansted was in their sights. Ryanair are well known for taking up such positions and have done this with a number of airports in the UK and their native Ireland.

Statements by the airline about their contract with Cardiff International Airport are incorrect. In fact, charges proposed by Cardiff International were less than the average that Ryanair publicly admits it pays across Europe.

Dublin-bound passengers left in the lurch by Ryanair need not worry. Award-winning airline Aer Arann have this evening confirmed that they will take over the lucrative 180,000 passengers-a-year Cardiff-Dublin route with a twice-daily service from next week. Fares from £19.99 one way including taxes will be offered on Aer Arann’s new service.

Aer Arann have already taken over Cardiff-Cork, announced new services to Lorient and is expected to announce a Cardiff – Galway service tomorrow.

I am not a genious in this area but it seems to me that it is only ryanair who have these kinds of problems!!!

You never hear of Jet2 or air southwest having these sorts of issues with airports!!!

Trust me Ryanair are not the only ones with this problem, its just that Ryanair use the dispute for publicity and to put additional pressure on the airport(s) in question.

I operated some DUB-CWL services earlier this year and the loads were nothing to write home about, amongst the worst of the DUB base. It’s a shame what happened but MOL won’t be losing any sleep (& he just won £100,000 with his horse this aternoon 🙁 )

As with every dispute, there are two sides to every story and it looks like the 5 year deal had come to an end and normal prices would of applied. All airlines will get a discounted rate for starting routes and as other routes come up for renewal the same thing could occur.

Cardiff has just lost a route worth 10% of 2005s total passenger numbers. They were hoping for a 22% increase this year, that now looks impossible with this and the demise of Air Wales. Aer Arann will never get anywhere near the numbers required.

Ryanair have always had arguments with airports and sometimes patch things up eg Dublin, Kerry, Cork, Derry, Bergamo and Hahn. However, Cardiff is being used as a sacrificial lamb to show others that Ryanair is serious and will move if pushed. Airports are fighting viciously with each other for passengers and Ryanair know it. Cardiff and Klagenfurt (airport in Austria where charges went up, Ryanair left with its 400,000 pax, Styrian Spirit took over and promptly went bankrupt nearly bringing the airport with it) will be used as examples.

Abertis, the owners of TBI and therefore CWL are in merger talks so there could bw a change in management in the future. EasyJet dropped Zurich in favour of Basel not so long ago for the reason ie charges.

Ref. Air Wales on the route, they were a joke with multi hour delays often leading to cancellations, and I don’t know if it was just this route or not. At the end of the day, there will be winners and losers and I know where my money is 🙂

Will Cardiff miss Ryanair? Depends on how well Aer Arann do in their place.

Not really. Loads were always good, but the timings were all over the place, and most people preferred the Air Wales service, its just there wasn’t enough capacity so FR was the only other option. I think RE could actually slot a 3rd daily flight in if they wanted to.

It’s a bit of a blow that 4 years ago MOL said he hoped FR to establish a base at CWL in the future, but that plan now seems dead and buried. However, there was no guarantee that that would happen, and as a result of Air Wales & Ryanair leaving, we now have 3 new airlines, more destinations and higher frequencies, so altogether I think its been a pretty good start to 2006 🙂

Aer Arann and CWL agreeing to continue flights would show this.

Will Cardiff miss Ryanair? Depends on how well Aer Arann do in their place.

Maybe its time for the airports to start fighting back after years of bullying by Ryanair – perhaps the time has come for MOL to realise that he needs the airports as much as they need him!

I know ryanair are well established and probably one of the biggest locos but how when they seem to anger so many people!!!

Maybe it’s deliberate?

The way I see it, Ryanair’s atrocious press releases are aimed exclusively at the kinda traveller that reads the sun.

Those of us that know better about low cost flights will fly because they are cheap. They seem to paint a picture that they are crusading against the evil aiports, the evil airlines, the evil Governments for our benefit, fighting the good fight (easyJet do it too, but slightly more subtle!)

Domestically speaking, are Ryanair going to shoot themselves in the foot, leaving Aer Arann to nip in as and when Ryanair pull out?

LOL Ryanair are always fighting with someone. I say raise landing fees at every airport in Europe and get rid of Ryanair altogether. A little different from the views I used to express about Ryanair but Ive had enough of them.
