Cycling to Coningsby

Hello all,

I noted the recent request not to drive to Coningsby on Friday to watch the Lanc in, but seeing as I’m a pretty keen cyclist I thought I could stick my camera in a rucksack and get there on two wheels, thus not getting in the way or upsetting the local populous. I won’t be cycling *all* the way from Cambridge but am happy to cover the last 5 or ten miles by bike.

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations as to where’s best to stand (e.g. am I guaranteed a decent view from Dogdyke Road to the west of the runway?).

I’ve never been to Coningsby before and ironically am booked in to visit the Canadian Lanc the next day but I couldn’t resist the chance to see her fly in.

Cheers for any info…

Haha – well it all worked out perfectly. The day started well when I got a phone call from my father asking if I’d left and if not could he come with me. So we both set off together, bikes on the roof of the car. The road closures didn’t really affect us – we just found a layby near Coningsby village, off the beaten track and then just as we were parking up a gent leant out of his car window and directed us to a little track which finished right alongside the runway in open fields.

By standing on the bike, dad and I got a few decent shots of the old gal landing and then a brilliant close-up view as she taxied past.

We did get absolutely soaked to the skin but what the hell? I wouldn’t have missed it 😉

Massive thumbs up and pat on the back to the Canadians, their aircraft looks majestic.

A few pics for those who have not seen them on the other thread(full album here):

Many thanks chaps – very handy replies!

Think my plan will hopefully work – the bike’s already in the car so no worries if I have to park some way away and cycle there. I’m not heading for one of the closed roads in the car so I should be OK.

Should be quite a spectacle tomorrow.

Many thanks for your replies both – I’ll bear your posts in mind!

I’ve had a look on Google maps and think I’ll approach the airfield on the B1192 as it’s not affected by the closures (or at least it’s open within cycling distance!) and it looks reasonably good in terms of visibility.

I just hope the weather is OK…

I’ll post some pictures up if I manage to get any!

The one good viewing area is as you say on the Dogdyke Road but it will depend which way she lands on the day. The other end of the runway is on Lanrick Road.

I am sure that she will make a few passes before landing in front of the crowds.

But check here for local road closures not that should effect you on a cycle.

Hope its a nice day for your ride and viewing.
