RE: Cyprus Airways A330

Up until a few years ago Airbus and Boeing had completely different design philosophies. The Americans built their planes like their cars and their women – big, strong and built to last. The downside of this is that they carried huge amounts of weight in their structure which meant that they had to use great big gas guzzling engine to propel them but heck, fuel was cheap. Airbus foresaw the fact that the accountant was becoming more and more important (are you happy now Mongu?) in the airlines management so they decided to try a different approach that would appeal to the money men. They calculated the minimum possibe safe structure required to do the job and invested in modern technology for weight saving (such as using fly by wire) and then used engines just big enough to meet performance requirements. This gives them a phenomenally low fuel burn. They also concentrated on establishing their own leasing program and won large orders which meant they could heavily discount. If the price of oil hadn’t risen I doubt Airbus would have fared so well but it has and they are now here to stay. One of their wisest moves was to tie in customers by the shrewd use of type commonality. This means that if airline A operates 737’s and airline B operates A320’s, if they both want a bigger aeroplane airline A buys the 757 and airline B buys the A321. Airline A has to send its pilots on a complete and expensive new type rating course and then those pilots cannot fly the 737 again in times of need without leaving the 757. Airline B’s pilots are automatically qualified to fly the A321 (as well as the A319 and A318, and only require a minimal conversion for the A330, A340 and probably the A380) and most importantly can interchange on a day to day basis.

RE: Cyprus Airways A330

How does the A330 manage to be so fuel efficient? I must say I was amazed to discover I would be flying non-stop on one from Dublin to LA.

How does it differ from the 4 engined A340 ? Presumably a trans-atlantic, trans-america flight is the maximum range for a 330, does the 340 simply go further on 4 engines ?

About Cyprus Airways to the CIS,they only serve Moscow. However, there is another Cypriot airline serving these destinations with the Bac 1-11.There must be other airlines such as Ukraine International and numerous charters from this region of the world to Cyprus also.

RE: Cyprus Airways A330

Fuel economy is no.1 guys. Don’t be so disparaging to accountants wysiwyg!

Fuel is the biggest single direct operating cost, at least it’s the biggest single cost which is easily controllable.

Therefore the main focus of any aircraft design will be fuel economy. Airbus just did a better job than Boeing, surely? Besides, the A330 is also photogenic – good looking and efficient, is there any more to design?!

RE: Cyprus Airways A330

Hmm yes mongu…maybe they start service to somewhere in CIS. They get an awful no. of charters from that region…aerflot IL 96s are a common site at Cyprus.

A330C….you know the A330 is just being succesful because its good on fuel….otherwise its a piece of s**t. }>

RE: Cyprus Airways A330

Good move.

Cyprus is a really major destination from the UK – combination of tourism, the UK armed forces presence, and business. Certainly there is a lot of Cypriot money in the IOM and I would suspect there is lots in Jersey/Guernsey too. Mostly ex-Russian…

Cyprus does huge amounts of business with Russia. Are there any direct air links to Moscow or maybe Kiev?
