More historical speculation…
Was there ever a serious study of a D-21 “Tagboard” drone converted to a long range cruise missile?
If it had been built, what performance might have been expected? Even allowing for some degradation in the switch from recon to attack, it seems it would have compared VERY favorably to other cruise missiles of the time, both in speed and range.
I guess the $64,000 is: what warhead did the US have at the time that would have fit? I *think* the jettisonable payload bay was ~800lbs, modified to attack role, perhaps ~1000lbs?
Discuss 😀
