SEATTLE — The FBI says it’s analyzing a torn, tangled parachute found buried in Southwest Washington to determine if it might have been used by legendary plane hijacker D.B. Cooper.
Children playing outside their home near Amboy, in Clark County, found the chute sticking up from the ground this month in an area where their father had been grading a road.
Agent Larry Carr says they pulled on the fabric as much as they could, then cut the parachute’s ropes with scissors. They had seen recent media coverage on the D.B. Cooper case and urged their dad to call the FBI.
Cooper hijacked a plane from Portland, Ore., to Seattle in 1971, got $200,000 and asked to be flown to Mexico. He parachuted from the plane’s back stairs somewhere near the Oregon border, and agents doubt he could have survived.
Carr says there are no markings on the parachute to indicate whether it’s the type Cooper used. He’s hoping someone with expertise in the parachutes will come forward and examine it.
