I though I had read somewhere that there was a single Hurricane involved with the Normandy invasion. Am I correct on this? If so, was it the Air Despatch Letter Flight aircraft? That is the only one I have been able to find any info on in my web searches. And then only very little. Are there pics to be seen of this, or any, Hurricane carrying invasion stripes? TIA

Here is a SIM artists rendition of an ADLS Hurri with invasion stripes. The codes are the correct ones (DR) so I suppose the artist must have done at least some research.

Daz is correct.
The codes are for 83 OTU Peplow in mid 1944.
The ADLS carried the codes DR.

Hmm… I can’t remember off the top of my head, but I *think* that’s the bomber defence one. The codes look the same as the one in the photograph, but without the mag in front of me I can’t be sure.
The ADLS Hurris had the wing stripes, and cannons, as I recall.

It is on page 36 of the Hurricane in action book.
Squadron signal No.72.
isbn 0-89747-174-1
D’oh! I never thought to look in that, but I was convinced it was in a mag.
Nevermind!

BTW, is the Corgi Hurricane (LF380) accurate by any chance? This is the 83 OTU aircraft showing invasion stripes on the fuselage only.

Thanks Daz and Bentwing. No need for the scan Daz as I have the “Hurricane in Action” book, just not close at hand at the moment. I knew I’d seen a pic of the Hurri somewhere.

Found it! There was a two-page article in Flypast’s D-Day tribute publication. I’ll scan the images in later, if you want?
There’s three – two of the ADLS Hurricanes, and a third used for bomber defence training, although only one of the ADLS Hurris has the stripes.

I have a funny feeling I’ve seen a photo of it – must be in one of the mags – but since I’ve had a clearout recently I very much doubt I still have it.
Unless it’s in a book someplace, but I very much think it’s the former….
