D H Heron (2007 thread)

Just wondering if anyone has seen a list of D H Herons around on the net? Seem to remember having been on such a website, although it could very well have been about Dove/Devons. Just trying to make sure how many Herons in various guises still fly.

l.garey, Thanks for that and apologies for the delay. Yes, I’ve already got some photos of G-ARDE (flew in her once from the hallowed concrete of Hatfield!) and “G-AFNE”, thanks. Appreciate showing them anyway!

Anyone else with interesting Dove/Heron photos?

Lee: I sent you an email in case you are interested in photos I have of the “fake” G-ANFE at Sharjah (in fact cn 14072). Did you get it I wonder?

Phixer – were you on 781 NAS? If so, when?

All – work is currently underway on a major new publication all about the Dove/Heron family. If anyone has any interesting shots/information then I’d love to hear from you.

Lee – is this the one due to be published by Air-Britain? If so, I offered several pics a long time ago and was told they have everything they need….and that was about two years ago! If not, then contact me as I have some pics you may be interested in using.

DH Herons

Wieesso:

Good day!

Saved the day!

That’s it DH Heron 114 HR-ASN (Aero-Servicios) in better times!Toncontin airport, Honduras. In the cockpit poss Capt. Armando Escalon Espinal (RIP). c. 1970s.

According to a seasoned commercial pilot, a possible “flap” came off while approaching Toncontin. Some 6 months prior to the accident the R/wing of the same aircraft cought on fire while being refueled at TNT.

p.s If any other pic emerges plz post! Tks

The transfer is quoted by FLIGHT August 28, 1953
http://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchive/view/1953/1953%20-%201101.html?search=G-AMSP

I only reported the dates as stated in BCA. Have to say I was sceptical, think the date in June (see above) is much more likely.

Think photos of this Heron as G-AMSP will also be rare. Jackson’s BCA Vol II shows a first flight date of 02 April 53 and delivery to Canada as CF-EYX via Prestwick 03 April 53.

We had one sample S.of the border at Tgu, Honduras c. 1969-1970. It belonged to a Co. name “Aero-Servicios” with the reg HR-ASN. C/n 14009. Unfortunately, it crashed while on approach to Rwy 19 at famous Toncontin airport on May 26, 1970, claiming the lives of the crew & 4 pax. (RIP).
According to witness, some 0.7 N.M from touchdown it made a violent bank to the left & then flipped up-side down crashing in a ravine nearby. We never heard the results of the accident investigation of that sad day in Honduras commercial aviation. Pictures of DH Heron 114, HR-ASN are rare.

This should be HR-ASN

Good Day!

Interesting thread on a classic aircraft!

Pictures of DH Heron 114, HR-ASN are rare. Will post one as soon it emerges fm the archives. We would like to see it as G-AMSP while in the U.K flying for RAF & prob as a VIP transport for the Queen c. 1950s. It later became CF-EYX at BC, Canada flying for the Ministry of Transportation. Tks

fah619……….

Think photos of this Heron as G-AMSP will also be rare. Jackson’s BCA Vol II shows a first flight date of 02 April 53 and delivery to Canada as CF-EYX via Prestwick 03 April 53. G-INFO shows a change of ownership date as 13 July 53.

In view of the above, not much flying in the UK and certainly none for RAF or Queens Flight.

Here it is in Canada where it spent virtually all its life: http://www.abpic.co.uk/photo/1098102/

For the Heron in Sweden, try contacting this group. They will know.

Mike

Afraid I don’t. Might be useful, though. Also the owners of the converted aircraft too.

Thanks

There are two still airworthy that I know of, Happy Miles’ example in an Admirals Barge scheme in Oregon, and the re-engined one at Vasteras. Plus of course the one that’s been parked at Coventry for the past 5 or 6 years – does anyone know the plans for this one?

Do you have contact details for Happy, Lee? If not, I could probably provide some.
